Hello,

It was recommended on british-genealogy.com that I re-post here; my apologies if this is posted in the wrong forum.

I'm attempting to find more information on Alfred Hampshire, born c.1876 in Oldham, Lancashire - died 13 July, 1945 in Cape Town, South Africa. Alfred fought in the Second Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902) and was married to Eva in Cape Town c.1903. Alfred is also alleged to have gone over in a troop ship to fight in France during World War One.

Alfred's date and place of birth comes from a plaque, made after his death, for a pair of his shoes. Unfortunately, his name is in much dispute - his gravestone reads "W.A. Hampshire" and some in my family believe his full name might be Wilfred Alfred or William Alfred. However, his wife only knew him as "Alfie" and the plaque gives his name simply as Alfred Hampshire.

I suspect that the Alfred Hampshire found in the 1881 Census - http://tinyurl.com/mn7wwz , born c.1878, son of William Hampshire and Mary Nield, might be the man I'm looking for, but without further identification I can't be certain.

I do have a photograph of Alfred in uniform - http://tinyurl.com/l39c6r - but I am unable to date the photograph, nor can I identify the uniform he is wearing. In the photo Alfred is the straight-standing man on the left. If anyone can find any identifying clues in the photo it would be appreciated.

Thank you for your time,
Craig Sheldon

Hi and welcome to the forum.

I've moved your message over to the Liverpool board as we don't have an area for Manchester here, another place you might like to try in addition is the Manchester Family History Society.

However, we do have a couple of members who have an excellent knowledge of military matters and I hope they will be able to give you some advice about the uniform. Those helmets certainly look as though they were in a hot climate don't they?
