Hi - i'm trying to trace my Carey family and would welcome any info anybody has!

They are the Carey family of Litherland.

Patrick Carey (abt 1839 Dublin? Ireland, died 1897, Litherland) married Catherine Caine (Kain/Cain/Kane/Cane) (abt 1849, Dublin?, Ireland, died 1922 Bootle). i believe they married in Ireland Dublin? about 1862 (guess form children's DOB)

Catherine's father was Thomas Caine. Thomas was alive in 1871 (and in the census) but i've not found him in 1881 nor have i found a death reference but i've not checked for all the Cain permutations yet!!

census wise:
1871; I have Catherine and Patrick and their children Greenfield Lane Cottages, Litherland.
1881; possible entries for two of the children individually (see below)
1891; Catherine and some of her children, 5 Norfolk Street, Bootle
1901; Catherine and some of her children, 27 recreation Street, Bootle

catherine and Patrick's children are:
thomas; born 1864 dublin
patrick; born 1865 dublin, Death; possible but not confirmed- liverpool in 1878 aged 10
francis; born 1869 litherland: marriage - i think he married Honora Peterson but i've not confirmed it is him - ages tally in the censuses but that isn't really saying much!!!
catherine; born 1872 litherland, married - James Ellison, died 1956 litherland
william; born 1874 litherland (my great grandfather), married Julia Ann Fuller, died 1955
Annie; born 1879 litherland, married William Gill, died 1929

in the 1881 census I have a Frank Carey in 1881 lodging with a William and Mary McEvilly. Mary's maiden name was Kain so i'm wondering if she could be Catherine's sister, but i'm having difficulty tracing them any further in the census.

i have possible reference for Thomas Carey in 1881 but no other of the children. I also have a possible for thomas in the 1891 census where he has a wife Ellen - but i can't confirm it is 'my' thomas nor have i found the marriage yet.

Does anyone have any info on any of the family at all???
i so know that there were a couple of other carey families in Litherland including Timothy and Ann Carey but i don't know if they are any relation of Patrick's. Any help would be wonderful!
Thanks

Hi Becca

I am starting to think a Dennis Carey could be the brother of your Patrick..

In 1881 we find Denis at Greenfield Lane lodging with the LARKIN family hes single aged 39 born Ireland occ Tanners Labourer.. wasnt Patrick a Tanner in 1871 ??

In 1891 hes at 118 Brookhill Rd same address your McEvillys-McAvellys were at..

heres who is there as it could be them still

Head William Mack age 50 Labourer b Ireland
Wife Nancy age 46 b Ireland
Lodger Denis Carey age 42 Labourer b Ireland

Could he have shortened his name to MACK.. and remarried an Ann known as Nancy or could Mary Cain/Kain be a Mary Ann who uses Nancy.

Their ages are out a wee bit as they were aged 35 & 33 in 1881, but i have seen worse.

If this Dennis Carey is Patrick's brother he got himself into loads of trouble

In 1899 he was found on enclosed premesis with unlawful attent at 2am sunday morn crouching in vestibul of Studley Lodge Crosby Rd Seaforth he had 2 knives on him, the judge said he had appeared before the court no less than 81 times in the past covering a period of 30 odd years..
he had no fixed address.. he was sentenced to 3 moths hard labour, he is noted as being an elderly man.. so i guess if he was 39 in 1881 he would be near 60 odd in 1899...

There was another report in Mercury newspaper in 1864 assaulting a Police constable in walton, he was fined 10 shillings and got 14 days in Jail.

I guess hes not as bad a s some not a murderer.. 81 times made me laugh i can just picture the judge saying it.

Not sure where your family are in 1881.. i see son Thomas in Bridewell Bootle on Derby Rd and i see son Frank with the McEvillys in Brookhill Rd.
If hes there then his parents may have gone over to Ireland

The two young ones in 1901 with Catherine little Francis age 10 and Joseph age 8, are they one of the sons kids ??

Ta!
I was wondering if Denis was connected as well.
Patrick was a tanner in 1971 and was living in greenfield lane so it does seem a good link.
the 118 brookhill road address also seem to coincidental doesn't it!
My grandad was also a Denis so i had wondered if is was a family name though if he was the rag a muffin it would seem i doubt the name would be passed on!!! However it is wonderful to know, as it's good to know about the person. How did you get access to the news archives? i've been trying to find them so i can see if i can find anything out about the ellisons..

very interesting thought on the Mcevilly's name. i think i've found Williams death in 1923 but i can't find Mary's, though i'm currently trying to work out all the spelling possiblities for the surname! i will look to see if i can find the marriage to Nancy and see if it predates Mary and i will try to see if i can find them in 1871 to see if they could be the same people.

1881 has always been a bit of a conundrum. I've been told that PAtrick often hot footed it back to Ireland and Catherine had to go a fetch him so they could have both been in ireland, she may have taken the younger children with her. Would kind of give you an idea about the family wouldn't it!
I believe the two boys in 1901 were Catherine Ellison (nee Carey) illegitimate boys, i.e. Patrick and Catherine 's grandsons

Hi

1901 118 Brookhill Rd

William McEverly age 19 Corporation Labourer b Ireland
Mary age 22 b Ireland

If this is the same couple their ages are way out, unless William is their son.

1900 directory William McAvealy 118 Brookhill Rd spelling are always different haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

Hi Becca

I have Careys in my family, couple of Cains by marriage too! . I hit a brick wall but discovered that some documents had them as Clarey, Clary and Cleary.
