I have been searching service records on Ancestry for three of my husband's uncles records , but haven't found anything. Have tried many variations of name spellings etc.

I have found their details on CWGC, and on Ancestry's W.W.1Medal Rolls.

Has anyone else had this problem ?

Hi Big G,
Depends which records you are looking at. The wwI service records currently state they are for surnames A-N although there is the odd page for other letters. Not sure if the pension and Medal Rolls are supposed to be complete or not.
I've certainly not been able to find some people I would expect to.

Joseph Lloyd, born Altcar, Lancs. died 9 april 1917 aged 20, The King's Liverpool regiment. No.30956.

James Lloyd, born Altcar, Lancs. died 31 August 1918 aged 19, The King's Liverpool Regiment. No. 381126.

(They were brothers)

John Burgess Dickinson, born Altcar, Lancs. died 23 March 1918 aged 23, The King's Liverpool Regiment. No. 30955.

I have found their Medal Roll details, and burial details from CWGC, would like to find their service records if possible.

I was looking on the site the other day and I found some info about the WW1 Soldiers service records, and it said that some soldiers used nick names or just initials.

On 9th April 1917, the 17th battalion supplied the “mopping up” parties as part of the First Battle of the Scarpe (9th –14th April). There role was to follow the lead troops and to deal with any enemy stragglers who had been missed by the main advance. Although there was little “mopping up” to be done, the battalion shared the risks of the main parties and when they fell back at midnight, “B”, “C” and “D” companies were located around the sunken road north of Boiry-Becquerelle and “A” company were in trenches west of Henin. They had lost 2 officers and 16 other ranks killed, with 3 officers and 48 OR wounded. .

With the German offensive of March 1918 underway, the 17th Bn were moved to Aviation Wood on the morning of the 22nd March, although it was 2.30 pm before they arrived. A strong German attack o Flesquieres took place and the Bn was ordered to fall back to the town of Ham, reaching there at 9.30 pm.and taking over the defence of the town. As dawn broke, the pressure on the town increased and at 6.30 am the 17th Bn began to withdraw through the town, blowing up the bridge north-west of the town at 7 am. Despite this, the enemy still managed to enter the town and the 17th were heavily engaged. The battalion fell back to take up a position with the 18th Bn north-east of Verlaines. From here, they advanced and formed a lineon the crest of a hill, although they came under heavy machine-gun fire. The situation was quiet for the remainder of the day and the battalion did not come under any further attack.

On 21st August 1918, the 13th Bn took part in the attack on Ecoust. The attack was a complete success, but incurred heavy casualties estimated at 9 officers and over 200 other ranks killed, wounded and missing.
