Hi ~

Please could anyone have a look at the 1891 census for me ... my Ancestry subs need renewing! :(

This family are most likely to be in Runcorn:
Andrew McQuinn (head of household) b. 1857 and his wife Jane b. c1853.

I would like to know who else is in the household and their ages (any other info would be a bonus too!)

Many thanks!
Paula.

We don't mind helping out, are you headed forward or backward with the family? ie 1901 or 1871 ( I know you can do 1881 yourself withour a subs).

Hi Mary ~

To be honest, I'm just starting out with this family. Andrew McQuinn (b. 1857) is the youngest brother of my great-great-great grandfather John McQuinn (b. 1841).

There were 9 children from that particular generation and they all tended to use the same names for their own offspring, so it does get a tad confusing!

(Even more confusing is the fact that Andrew and John both married women from the Hough family ... Jane and Maria, respectively.)

I have the burial records from 2 graves in Runcorn cemetery which show two McQuinn infants buried ... Ellen Pope McQuinn (1880-1881) and Jacob McQuinn (1890-1891). There aren't any headstones for clues, but I imagined that they must be the children of Andrew & Jane as the other people interred in the plots are from the Hough family. Jane and Maria are also buried there, but Maria died (age 30) in 1867 so the infants aren't hers.

Looking at the list of children that Barbara posted illustrates how the births of Ellen and Jacob fitted into the scheme of things!

Bestest,
Paula.

PS:

The 1881 census: I searched the names of Andrew and Jane McQuinn in the 'FamilySearch' website but got no results. Not sure why (?)

Hi Tina ~

Coo, yes that is interesting. The James Thomas McQuinn you've found would appear to be the son of Andrew & Jane (same age & born in Western Point, Runcorn). I wonder what he was inventing? Was Ada his wife? I wonder what she was inventing ... there couldn't have been many female inventors in 1901 surely? They sound like a fascinating couple!

Yes, your other find, with Jane as head of house, would be J.T. Mc's mother and his brothers Wallace & Andrew. It looks as though Jane's hubby Andrew had passed away by 1901 then.

Many thanks for your research ... incl. solving the puzzle of the 1881 census (the census officer's handwriting must have been particularly awful!)

NB: On t'other side of the family (Gaddes) we are related to the Wiper family from Cumbria who invented (accidentally btw!) Kendal Mint Cake :D

Bestest,
Paula

Ooops, sorry Tina ... just seen the 2nd part of your post about the hotel/doss house Perhaps Andrew was given his marching orders ... oh dear! (Funnily enough, the same thing happened to his brother John ... but he went into lodgings a few streets away from the family home!)

No, I haven't gotten around to looking at the 'other' Ellen Pope McQuinn yet (Pope was the grandmother's maiden name). Seems spooky to have given a subsequent daughter the same name as an earlier one who passed away ... but it was a tendency amongst the McQuinns (I've found other cases). Perhaps it was considered OK in the 19thC?

Bestest,
Paula.

Hi Zed
I've a feeling they named another child after the deceased as a mark of respect.
I looked at Ada Emily Gandy's family, she has no occupation in 1891, Dad George was a sailor (no rocket scientists here!)
You'll find them okies in 1881 George bn Runcorn 1833 waterman .
Marr Ada to James T in Runcorn march qtr 1898 (civil marr)

Marr Eliza Jane McQuinn to John James Killip
1900 Lpool reg off or registrar attended.

1901 107 Park St Tox Park
John James Killip 25 rlwy carter bn Lpool
Eliza Jane 22, Elizabeth McQuinn 15 cigarette packer both bn Runcorn
n.b Eliz as step sister, writing looks like wifes sister.

Wallace McQuinn is in Chorlton rego in the 1911 census also a Wallace Stewart McQuinn 7yrs, his son?
There's a marr for Ellen P McQuinn Chorlton rego to Charles N Sidwell 1905.
Lancs BMD states St George's church Hulme.
Death dec qtr 1918 Chorlton rego
Jane McQuinn 65 yrs bn 1853c.
1911 Eliza Jane Killip and hubby also in Chorlton.
1911 Ellen Pope Sidwell in Chorlton district.

All roads lead to Mother...
except perhaps for James Thomas McQuinn who could be in Bristol.

Well done Tina! you've run away with that lot.

No results in the newspapers, they finish at 1900 so maybe it's not surprising, I was hoping to find out what they might have invented.

Thank you Mary.
I have the advantage of sending a post, then editing as no one would have read it yet...from UK.
To Zed when I listed Andrew in lodgings, I should have been more sensitive. I just thought he had a shoemaking job in Lpool.
It's a lesson to be learnt.
I'll list Elizabeth for Zed.

WOW Tina ... many thanks for ALL that :D That info has filled a lot of blanks on the tree! (Please let me know if I can do anything in return?)

Oh gosh, no worries about 'the hotel' Funnily enough I used to be a registered householder with Merseyside Accommodation Project (ie: I used to let rooms in my own house to homeless youths). I'm far too old for wall-to-wall rap musak now though

'The inventors' are indeed a bit of a puzzle ... all other members of the family worked in unskilled jobs, and yes indeed, many of the men over several generations were boot & shoe makers (which is where the tannery connection seems to fit in!)

Thanks again!
Paula.

Well done Zed taking in young people, a credit to you.
These days they have their ipods or busy sending sms messages.
It's so much quieter when the schoolies get on the bus compared to about 8yrs ago.

I'm busting to find out what they were inventing!
I've tried 1911 for little Flo also Ada Emily with no surname as goodness knows what McQuinn could be....

Chat again in a couple of days.

Best wishes
Tina
