Hi Philrob,

In the 1914 directory.

91 Netherfield Road South "The Clock" Robert Matthew Robertson.

It is Everton there was none of that name in Bootle.

Next door was Ann Fowlers haha.

William Henry Wynn was at The Clock in 1911 directory.

Dear Jan44 and someone,

Thank you for your replies, especially the reference to Robert Matthew Robertson - he was my Grandfather's brother. Also thanks for the correction of the address being Everton not Bootle.

Best Wishes, :D

The 1909 official City Licensing Report Book shows that the pub had a full licence (ie Beer, wines & spirits), was in Police B Division; the tenant, with no tie to a brewer, was Wm Brophy; the owners were the Executors of John Westmoreland. There were two doors into Netherfield rd South and one into Roscommon St [ie a corner site]. 714 square feet of drinking space, 7 rooms for domestic use and 8 licensees since 1900 - quite a turnover!. The licensee in Nov 1907 was found drunk and fined five shillings.
The pub closed some time afer that, but I do not know when.

Thank you for your interest and your replies. I was fascinated to read the info provided by Daggers as to the physical layout of the Clock.

I have a battered January 1909 copy but the information is also in the LRO, possibly with other years. The layout is by the address and not by the name/sign of the premises or licence-holder.
Look-ups available.

Hi

Anything on the Penrhyn Castle Penryhn St..My Great Grandad became licencee of the NOOK in Nelson St China Town after many years of being the manager there, but that was in the 20's/30's.

I know he was at the Penrhyn Castle but only as a barman then manager in 1907 dont know where he was after this as this pub closed and he got compensation for the closure..dont know where he went after this i have a blank..hes down as manager in 1911.

1909: 31 Penrhyn Street, fully licensed, Police Division B; Arthur Henry Pratt, Manager; Harding & Parrington Ltd., owners; 2 entrances in Penrhyn St; 372 sq ft drinking space; 5 domestic rooms; 5 licensees since 1/1/1900; closed in 1909 and the owners compensated (when many local pubs were being closed).
No name is shown for this pub in the book. Penrhyn St was off Gt Homer St.
H & P were brewers with premises at Brunswick Brewery, St James's St. Taken over by [the original] Cains in 1920 with over 50 pubs.
OK?

That takes me back a bit Colette, I remember going down there to see if there was any chance of a photo - sadly there was nothing there to find.
