Holly,
I think Tank Lane may have been in the Greetby Hill/Tower Hill area it almost certainly went off Wigan Road somewhere.

1930s map shows a Waterworks Rd off Greetby Hill, opposite the junction with Tower Hill, leading to...a water works! Another water works is shown further east along where Greetby Hill has become Dark Lane.
Could these be relevant?

Did a streetname search in the 1881 census and Tank Lane appeared in District 7. This is what the Enumerator's description says, although it doesn't mention Tank Lane specifically, hope it's useful.
That part of the township of Ormskirk (viz) commencing at the Mansion House in St Helens Road along the south side of Wigan Road to Stanley Street.
Thence both sides of Wigan Road including Mill Street and Dickinson Street to the Lathom Boundary the whole of Greetby Hill and both sides of Derby Street up to the Junction of Stanley Street.

Looking at the writing in the 1881 census (there are Altys living there by the way) Tank could almost be read as Dark ..... could this be significant?

Thank you all for your replies. I think it must have been Dark Lane and certainly that area as there used to be 2 water towers, one on Tower Hill Dark Lane) and one on Greetby Hill, one on Scarth Hill and one in Ruff Wood!
My Altys are from North Meols, but thanks for the info.
I came across Tank Lane as I was transcribing and just wondered where it might have been, now I know - thanks for your time, as always appreciated.
Now for a real dilemma, do I carry on with my U3A Computer Course or change to Local History -
