Holy Trinity Wavertree Graveyard

Hi all,

I know the subject of grave numbers and locations have been discussed before for Holy Trinity Church Wavertree, but were there any conclusions arrived at? I have a baby brother, a grandfather and a great grandmother buried there and despite myself and my other half having been twice to look at every grave have found nothing. I can only assume they are buried in graves without a headstone. I have burial dates for all three and suspect my brother and grandfather may be in the same grave.

I have e.mailed the church twice and never received a reply. I have spoken to the Verger and he reckons their isn't any records of grave numbers, locations etc. which I find a bit odd. Does anyone have any other ideas of finding locations there?

cheers,

Roy Montrose

Hi, Having found my Gt. Grandmothers grave I visited and saw her name only on the headstone. I was a little saddened to think she was on her own but not so.... she had the company of her brother and her husband and several others! All these names were on the deeds but not the headstone, but for life of me I cannot remember which member of the forum helped me - if that's of interest I'll sift through all my paper!! Holly

A fire in 1961 appears to be blamed for the loss of many records but both the Records Office and the Liverpool Diocesan Office are suggested as being helpful on the website for Holy Trinity Wavertree Church

Hi Holly,

Thanks for your reply.

The burials that you mention, are they in Holy Trinity and are the deeds relevant to that grave? The reason I ask is I'm a little ignorant on burials. graves etc and wasn't aware that deeds were necessary for Church Graveyards, only council cemetaries? If your burials took place in Holy Trinity Wavertree then any info you have would be most appreciated.

Thanks Mary, as I say I've e.mailed them twice via their website but never received a reply. I'll have another peek at the website and see if I've missed anything that may be helpful,

Regards,

Hi

Churches with a graveyard would generally have had a grave register. This would give a number to each grave. This often remains in the church keeping. It sounds as if it is likely that this may have been lost in the fire. The grave register is separate to the burial register.

If the present verger hasn't heard of it unless the Diocesan Office knows were it is or it's at Liverpool Record Ofice I fear you will have to assume it was lost in the fire. Unfortunately without it if your family are in an unmarked grave it'll be pretty impossible to find out where they are buried within the churchyard.

People's deeds to a grave would be for their grave only.

Hi all,

Thanks for your replies and help.

I e.mailed the Vicar at Holy Trinity yesterday and received a reply back from her within 10 minutes! She informed me that all church records pre 1967 have been destroyed by fire and the only records available were located at Liverpool R.O. which of course is where I obtained my original information on whereabouts my relatives where buried. She also told me that even if they had the records she believed that they wouldn't tell me the location of the grave, only the name and date of the burial, which I find odd.

Anyway, the bottom line is that it doesn't look as though I'm going to locate the actual graves. :(

One thing that I still don't understand and maybe someone can enlighten me, If a private family grave is obtained and bought in a council cemetary, deeds are issued. Is it the same for a Church cemetary i.e do you have to pay and are deeds issued?

Thanks for all your help,

Regards,
