Register Offices

Post by antonio111 »

I was not sure whee to put this query as it pertains to more than one area. Can anyone tell me when the St Helens register office opened and also the Wigan one.

i have been told that births in Upholland may have been registered at St Helens but I dont think this is correct.

Hi Ant,
Not sure if this helps answer your question, but if you go to the Lanc BMD site and for example search the births for SMITH, there are entries for Upholland (as sub-district) of Wigan, with registers at Wigan and Leigh (ref John in 1837 and Catherine in 1838.

Hi Chris,

Thats what I thought. It appears you can notify of births elsewhere though the actual registration takes place in the area the birth occurred.

Register Offices

If you look on the coverage page on the www.lancashirebmd.org.uk website you will see the years that have been indexed at each Register Office.

The indexes for Wigan & Leigh Registration district for all births and marriages from 1837 to 1950 have been added and death indexes are now being checked and added in ten year batches.

Some marriages which took place in the old registration districts may have been moved between present day registration districts as the boundaries changed.

Its best to check on the website to see if you can find them there as the correct Register Office is automatically printed on the application form.
