WILLIAMS FAMILY TOXTETH PARK 1915

My grandmother was widowed in her 30's with four young children, the youngest being 1 yr. Does anyone know what happened to families in this period who had no bread winner. I am trying to find out what happened to the four children my father being one of them. Rumour of Seaman's orphanage has been proved incorrect. Their father worked for Mersey Docks and Harbour Board prior to death! The only other clue, this could be wrong, is that my father said was sent to Wales to work on a farm when he was 14. Where he was until then I do not know. He had no contact with his siblings in the years he was alive. He never talked about them. My grandfather had brothers and sisters and in fact sister in law registered the death. I really need the 1921 census.

Thanks

Marie

I think the jury is still out on whether Marie thinks this is definitely her family or not.

Have you followed up on the suggestions given in the previous thread? Which of the schools/institutions apart from the Seamans Orphanage have you checked the Admissions Registers for so these can be crossed off the list. Have you checked the site I gave to see if the girls names were listed travelling to Canada?

To answer your question
Does anyone know what happened to families in this period who had no bread winner.
generally speaking they managed as best they could, the mother often either taking in laundry, going out to clean or becoming a "dressmaker". Hopefully they might have had other family members living nearby to help look after the children while the mother worked.

I think one place for you to check at the Record Office would be the parish registers, not necessarily for baptisms etc. but there would be minute books listing money given in parish relief. This might have happened a couple of times, although not often, but if you find them the dates could be useful to you.

PS. The official 100 years hasn't yet elapsed for the 1911 census to be available, so there's no chance of the 1921 census for at least another ten years.

I did look on the institution website but I have no idea, which one it would be. I am now doubting whether any of it was true as the Seaman's orphanage was wrong. Also, I now know there was a lot of family around older brothers family seeemed to have taken charge of death registration etc. So feel may be wasting time looking at orphanages.

Through genesreunited I have found a distant relation whose mother is 70 and the grand daughter of Charles older brother. Unfortunately she lives in Spain and is not back until June. Just a slight chance she may remember something said when she was a child.

Thanks you.

MaryA, This is definitely my family although one generation before, I am still trying to find out what happened to the later generation. I am aware that the 1921 census will not be available. I was just making the comment that I could do with it now to fill in this gap for my Dad's siblings.

Thanks

Have no checked Canadian home children lists no Williams, there was a gap between 1914 and 1920 in most of them because of War no doubt. Which makes it even less likely they went. Father died in 1915 and they were probably too old by 1920. Very few females on the lists anyway

I have had visitors from Scotland since last Wednesday so have not been able to do very much but cook and clean. The children's names were Nellie 1906, Elizabeth 1907, Charles Joseph 1908 (my Dad) and Richard 1910. As I said earlier my Dad was 8 when his dad died. There was quite a big family of Aunts and Uncles so I am wondering whether any of them helped out. I am still tring to find out what happened to mother Ellen Hughes I have tried to find out when she died but have not had much luck.

I am now thinking they did not go to Canada, as my father wasn't in the orphanage.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Marie
