Hi

A member recently posted details of a Liverpool-born George FEARNS who was living with his family in Llanbeblig, Carnarvonshire, in the mid-1800's.
Should it be of any interest to this member I have just received a copy certificate for my ggg-grandfather's second marriage :-

Llanbeblig, Carnarvonshire
14 October 1844
By Licence

Thomas FEARNS, of full age, widower, occupation master mariner, residence No 1 Dale Street, Liverpool, father Joseph FEARNS, master mariner,
and
Ellin DAVIES, of full age, spinster, residence Bangor Street, Carnarvon, father Thomas DAVIES, painter.

Witnesses were Captain William DAVIES, spirit dealer, and Margaret EVANS.

The groom was baptised Thomas Collins FEARN on 3 July 1810 in Brixham, Devon, eldest son of Josiah FEARN and Sarah COLLINGS (from the IGI).

His first marriage (as Thomas FEARON) was to an Ann RAMSEY, on 3 August 1829 in Liverpool St Nicholas (also from IGI).

Thomas and Ann (Ramsey) FEARN's daughter Sarah Ann FEARN (b1831 Liverpool) married my gg-grandfather William MARTINDALE on 23 April 1850 in Liverpool St Peter (certificate).

Thomas FERNS, fisherman, aged 56, was found drowned in Carnarvon Harbour on 6 January 1867. (Information received from Ed Griff POWELL, coroner for the county of Carnarvon. Inquest held 7 January 1867).

Less than two years earlier, on 15 January 1865, my gg-grandfather's youngest brother Peter MARTINDALE (b1840 Liverpool) and his cousin James MARTINDALE (b1819 Liverpool) were amongst seven men drowned in the River Mersey when the Liverpool No 1 lifeboat capsized whilst attempting to rescue passengers & crew of the Confederate American vessel LELIA which had sunk in a storm in Liverpool Bay on her maiden voyage.

James MARTINDALE had been master of both the No 1 and No 2 Liverpool lifeboats since 1852.

Thank you for the responses, although I was in fact already aware of the identity of the other FEARNS researcher and of the Crosbie Street thread.
Tsumi is presumably either busy doing other things just now or has concluded (as I have done) that there is no connection between our two FEARNS families, even though they were both in Liverpool at one time and both in Llanbeblig by the mid-1800's.

Wondered if there might be another member somewhere with an interest in the name MARTINDALE?

Hello Dorothy,

I have just read your post,s and at first thought we have a connection, but reading down and your final comments am not so sure.

Here is an interesting snippet about Devon and possible room for more thought,s ...
George Fearans grandaughter Elizabeth Mary Palmer born 1874,Llanbeblig,her father James Palmer was born 1841,Plymouth Devon.

Another fact you mention, about drowning,s, I have some old documents telling of Elizabeths, mother,s Grandfather drowning at sea,he was from Caernarvan, but as yet no date,s, nor a name, but I gather it was 1860+.

Cheers Tsumi :)

Hi T from T
What a fascinating post!
Was Elizabeth's grandad who died at sea George Fearon?
Sorry if it's sounds a dopey question.

Hi Dorothy
On a lighter note, my Art teacher was Miss Martindale from Calderstones (posh) Her father was a coal merchant.
My Ma would not buy coal from him, he topped the bags up with slack!
He was born in a 2 up and 2 down in Wavertree. Me Ma never forgave him for not treating his own "proper"...

Hi Tina,
I got the information about the drowning in the Liverpool Archives .
Hannah Fearans my Grt grandmother died in the Lunatic Asylum,(their dreadful words not mine)and the notes on her state.
Paternal Grandfather a sailor drowned, and from family folk lore I gather it was 1850-70 ish, seems someone spoke to another rellie in the past and recounted the story through the years.
So I wonder if the George Edward Fearans (Cooper) was related and was George,s father?
The details on the admission forms for her admitance to Rainhill are very detailed and even give Mother and Father temperament ,also a photo.May God love her,she looks demented.
George was Sanguine, and Hannah hasty, now I now where I get my haste from.

Cheers Tsumi
