a new piece in the Sarah Ellen Cahill jigsaw

Up till now we didn't have much on Sarah's husband, James Thomas Cahill's background. BUT !

1911 census shows him at age 44 (b. 1867) living with Margaret his 2nd wife whom we know a lot about, and a nephew, William Kerwin. He says he was born in Liverpool. We always thought he had been born in Ireland. So let's follow this up !

A Thomas Cahill (same father's name as on James' marriage cert) marries a Bridget Brereton in 3rd qtr 1863 Liverpool. They have 2 sons.

Thomas has died in the 4th qtr of 1870 in Liverpool aged 40.

But in the 1871 census Bridget Cahill..Head.. widow.. age 30..washerwoman..b Ireland is there with 2 sons, James aged 4 and Richard aged 2.

Bridget remarries a John Whittemore 4th qtr 1874 at St Peters Liverpool.

Now I know this doesn't put the finger on Sarah Ellen's disappearance, but it would be nice to confirm that this is her husband and just possibly may lead us in a new direction.

Any thoughts all those people still interested ??

Thanks

Alan

The William Kerwin could be the son of Margaret's sister? Unless James had a sister too.

If there is a chance James was born Liverpool, then maybe try searching the 1891 again

I thought you had the details and had found William with the family, it's a bit difficult to work from assumptions when all we have is the index to go by.

Beat me to it Mary!
Hi Alan,
If you have viewed 1911 household it must have given an age for the nephew?
Tks

Hi Mary,

On the search I tried putting him as being born Liverpool/Salford/West Derby/Wavertree etc and it didn't come up, so I just tried putting in Lancashire, and he came up again. This was all with having a James Cahill also at the address.

Well the nearest in the 1901 is living 35 King William Street, Regent Road, Salford
William Kerwin Head M 44 Book Cloth Back Finisher Manchester
Mary A Wife M 42 "
Joseph Son S 19 Pawn Brokers Assistant "
Samuel son S 17 Cloth Drier Salford
James son 15 Office Boy "
Mary A daur 12 "
Ellen daur 10 "
George Son 7 "
William son 5 "
Alfred son 3 "
RG13; Piece: 3738; Folio: 154; Page: 25

I know he's married to "Mary" in 1881 but I think the marriage to Mary A must be Manchester, St. Philip 1882 to Mary A Morgan, but I'm suspicious that he might have been married earlier to Mary Sumner in 1874 Liverpool, St. Peter.

Are those names any help?

Apologies for my previous vague reply. I have not personally seen the 1911 Census where William Kerwin was named. I received information from another source whom I consider trustworthy. All the information in the initial post was from that source. Don't want to lose my credibility.

Thanks

I think we are now accepting that it is the 17 year old William as he is with the two Cahills.

I've still been looking for one to fit, apart from the entry I gave above in Salford, there is also this possibility

40 Elias Street, North Everton - all born Liverpool except where stated
Robert Hughes Head M 50 General Labourer
Ellen Wife M 39
Ellen KIRWEN Head Wid 37 Charwoman Ireland
Michael son 13
Edward son 11
William son 6
Sarah E daur 2

Call it stupidity, naivety , ignorance or just plain confusion, I dont know how Kerwin fits into the matrix. Other than the piece of info as a nephew of James Cahill, I had never heard of him and haven't till this day.

Maybe I am too simple a soul.

Still appreciating all the input !

Thanks

Remember !
Margaret Cahill born Margaret Ashton had been married to
Thomas Fitzgerald......(Marriage of 1st July 1897). Perhaps the Kerwin connection comes through that marriage. Sorry   if this is the connection as I can't see it having any relevance to the James Cahill/Sarah Ellen Williams marriage.

But what is new ?? This enquiry is mind boggling, at least at my end !!
Tina, does this help your investigation ?

Thanks

Alan
