I am looking into the history of a wind- and steam-powered mill in Wellington Road, close to the main line railway bridge. It was run by a William HULL, then by a Mrs KEVAN [who may have been a daughter of Hull]. It was then run by the BLYTH family until its demise around the end of the 19th century. The Blyths were from Scotland, and brought with them relatives named MEIKLE and DOUGLAS.
The site of the mill was owned by the Marquess of Salisbury, and it stood roughly where Wimbledon Street now exists.
I have much detail on the Blyths and a small picture of the mill, some on Douglas and Meikle.
Any information on the mill and its early operators would be welcome.
[This mill is not the same as the more famous King's Mill, near the old Abbey Cinema.]

Great suggestion, and thanks for the detail of leases. I had made a note to look for the Salisbury papers before you posted, but was daunted [?] by the possible volume but have now been less daunted.

Sorry this comes a long time after your original posting. I am interested in Wavertree Mill as I am descended from the Meikle family, and would be interested to share information if you would like to.

First of all, welcome to this forum where lots of helpful people provide useful tips and information.
How strange to find your post here, as I have also had a PM this morning about Wellington Road Mill and a previous owner.
I have traced the Blyth family back to Midlothian in the first half of the 19th century. They and relatives named Meikle and Douglas were all from that area and came to be involved in the working of that Mill, the common thread being sisters called Douglas.
I have plenty on Blyth, and a little on the other connections. If you can send me a personal message with your email address and some outline of what you have found I will be able to let you have more. Are you in Liverpool?

i have sent you a PM with my email address. From my research, the Douglas sisters I think are actually the Davidson sisters, as my gggrandmother Mary Davidson married James Meikle, her sister Henrietta married John Blyth and their other sister Cathrine married Adam Douglas, so three sisters moved to the mill from Edinburgh with their three husbands. I dont know anything about the Blyths (except they went on to make the money and my Meikles didnt!), so would be interested to share about this.

My error -early morning fog! Yes the sisters are indeed Davidsons.

Just a note to say I've found a brother of an ancestor called John Kelly living at what looks like Mill Yard but on maps appears to be Mill Row, Wellington Road on the 1851 Census, occupation was miller. Also in Wellington Road on the 1841 Census. Baptism of their son Henry in 1846 at St Oswald's RC has Godparents as Joseph and Ellen Hull.

It looks like William Hull died in 1851 and was buried at St Oswald's.

Thanks Daggers. The Hulls were at Roby Mill in Upholland in 1841 so they were not tenants for a long period of time at Wellington Road. My Arnolds in the Isle of Man moved from mill to mill I suppose tenant millers had to be prepared to make a move to maintain or improve the standing of their business.
