Hello There,
I am a newbie, having just found this FHS and forum.
I learnt recently that my Gt.Grandfather, William Culloden, died in the workhouse in Liverpool. I am led to believe he actually died in the workhouse, but the address of his place of death is given as 88 Westbourne Street, Liverpool. I found him on the 1901 census as living in Everton, aged 61 yrs. of age, with his third (or is it his fourth?!) wife, and their four year old daughter.
Would anybody know which workhouse this would be please, and also, as to whether it was a hospital in 1917.
Many thanks in anticipation.
June Marie

I am a little embarrassed

I have been trying to reply to each and every one who has provided me with such a wonderful response to my query, I am working on it

(Mental note; new member not too bright)
That is brilliant info Doedoe, thank you! Thanks Holly, I will check that out, very informative. I think it is working now Dodo, and thanks.
Northmeols. You are so right, beginning with my Gt. Grandmother, who sadly died the year my Grandmother was born, my Gt.Grandad had an eye for the Irish Colleens! Buttttt. There were two Williams, one born in 1840. I am hoping that he is the one who married Bridget Tierney, as Bridget was alive when he married Margaret Coffey!

I hadn't come across the name Fitzpatrick, that is a new one on me.
Thanks again for all this help, I think you are all amazing.
June

if you look up on Lancs bmd they will list the wife twice if they had previously been married sadly we cannot tell which is the maiden name from the entries.

Hello June,
See William was living in Vine St in 1901, his occupation Picture Frame Maker .
Had a look at Gores Directory of Liverpool 1911, 8 Vine Ter wasnt listed . Found a William Culloden living at 10 Willmott St, his occupation was a Whitesmith, this would fit in with him being a Frame Maker in 1901 .
in 1911 living at 88 Westbourne St, was a Alfred Coulson no occupation given - similar surname !!. Think the nearest workhouse would be Mill Lane, which later became Olive Mount Hospital .
Some members have the 1914 directory I am sure one will do a look up to see where William was at that time .
Correction : address Vine Ter .
Hope this helps .

Hello Doreen,
I visited Liverpool Record Office one Sunday in July, the archivist had not come across Vine Street and it did not appear on any maps. She thought it was Central, but I remembered from the census it was in Everton. We had such a little time in there, I wasted what time I had by searching at the large workhouse. I understand if you find the entry it reveals quite a considerable amount of information.
I think that would be 'my' William living at Wilmott Street and very much appreciate that information. As you say, Coulson is not far removed from Culloden.
If SKS would kindly look up for me in the 1914 directory, it would be extremely helpful.
Thanks again, I feel I have come far in my search today.

Hello Susan,
I have not come across that site before, I use freebmd and ancestry, everything but, and that was a bonus to have the two names, I have been researching for some time, and have never been aware of that, so thank you for that. It is possible that this William is William C's adoptive son, so many Williams!

Hi June, regarding the marriage of William to Mary Clune/Maloney in 1877 posted by Susan, I found this on IGI.
Mary Clune married William Moloney 25 July 1859, Cathedral, Manchester.
Marriage 2 for her:
Mary Moloney married William Culloden 26 Nov 1877, Cathedral, Manchester
Not sure if this is your William, but posted info just in case

Hi June, I've been doing a bit of detective work on FreeBMD.
Marriage Mar Q 1859 West Derby 8b 643
Bridget Fitzpatrick / Michael Tierney
Marriage Sept Q 1885 Manchester 8d 389
Bridget Tearney / William Culloden
If these are your William's marriages you now know which was wifes maiden name and previous married name.

Hi June,
Going back to William's death and the place of death 88 Westbourne Street . On the death certificate, did it give the name of anyone who may have been present at the time of his death and who regististered it .
Hopefully, when we get a look up of the 1914 directory to see who is at 88 Westbourne Street and to see if there is a William Culloden entered in it we may get a bit more info .

Hi Doreen,
I learnt of William's death at this address on Tribal Pages, I don't have a copy of the death certificate myself, I was hoping to be able to obtain this information when I visited the Record Office last month, but time was short it being a Sunday, so I didn't have any success. The staff were most helpful, but dismissed any workhouses in or near Everton, as Vine Street, his last known address to myself, was not on the map.
