William George Anderson's Family

by I D Anderson
I am searching for any information on my Grandparent William George Anderson born about 17th.December 1876.
His father was George Anderson ,whose occupation was given as "Stock & Share Broker" in Liverpool in 1898,his mother was Bessie Anderson-nee Thompson,[this info.from George's marriage certificate 1899]
He was at St.George's Everton School in June 1880,
and he had a brother David at St.Georges Everton Infant School on 12th.August 1880.
William was at Netherfield Hall College in Midsummer 1886-He could have been known as "Master George Anderson" at this school according to an inscription in a book prize he received.
I have copy of "The Key to the Twelfth Edition of Reed's New Guide Book"
that was purchased from Lewis's in Ranelagh Street Liverpool. This book has the following hand-written inscription-"William George Anderson.Ship "Astracana"Liverpool Aug.1.1890".
William is believed to have come to Australia as 2nd.Mate on the sailing ship Loch Garry
.He married Marguerite Marshall 14th September 1899 in Melbourne Victoria Australia.
I have a portrait of his family that was taken in the"Electric and Daylight Studios of Richard Brown 35 Bold St.Liverpool",the persons in the photo appear to be a Father,Mother, two Sons and four Daughters(some may be inlaws)
Can any body help with any more information regarding this family?
I am submitting this again in the hope that something in the above may help identify this ANDERSON family if read by current members and if anybody can let me know how to past a copy of the family photo so any person who may be interested can view it.

Hi,

The records for the school are in Liverpool Records Office, they are closed this week though.

RefNo 283 GEV/13
Title St. George's Church of England Schools Log Books (Infants and Junior Mixed)
Date 1879-1973
Extent 8 volumes
AccessConditions Access will be given to any accredited reader .

There are other records, I got the above from their website.

Maybe when they open next week and if someone is going there they could look at the school records for you.

I seem to remember you posting this request on here some time ago, but I can't find your original posting.

Hi Jan
Yes it is me again on the same search but with the details I got from WGA's wedding certificate.
Hopefully someone will have the time to look up the school records and uncover an address for me,it would be much appreciated.
Also thanks Tina I did consider the butcher but William's age did not match and I think there were more siblings than shown at that address so I will hope the school reference will be forthcoming with a home address.
Thank you both for your interest.

No help really, but an observation!!
To be a Second Mate, husband says he would have to b a Midshipman first for about 4 years, then take exams and sail at 3nd Mate etc
Also, what was he doing on a sailing ship at age 14? Was he alone or with family?
It might be worth trying to see if there are any records for him

School Log Books record the daily life of school they rarely contain information on individual upils except possibly the death of a pupil or if a pupil has done something really interesting won a scholarship or compettition etc. only an admissions register would record an address for a pupil. My list of school holdings (elderly) only gives an admission register from 1916 perhaps an earlier one has been found.

I'd rather bump this one up the list than have a new post made, as there are comments made against it to which you didn't respond previously.

I will put a lock on the other as it would seem to be a duplicate of this.

Noticing the names of the family, this would seem to be the same ones in 1901 as Dorothy found for 1891, note the change of occupation for George.

77 Paddington, Edge Hill, West Derby, Lancashire
George Anderson Head M 64 Furniture Broker (Agent) own account. At home. born Scotland
Eleanor Wife M 48 Anglesea Holyhead
Ellen Prescott stepdaur S 22 Liverpool
Sarah E Prescott " S 13 "
John McNamara, 28, James McNamara, 22, Michael Horrigan 22, Patrick Flynn 21, all boarding in the house, all single, Corporation Plate Layers, born Ireland.
RG13; Piece: 3496; Folio: 10; Page: 11

Did you get a copy of the marriage certificate for George and Eleanor to check if he was a widower? and also what the address was. The witnesses might also prove useful.
George Thompson Anderson married Eleanor Prescott Q1 1890 Liverpool 8b 287 you can order this online at www.gro.gov.uk

I would suggest you make enquiries direct with the Liverpool Record Office to enquire whether they have any Admissions Registers (not Log Books) for the appropriate date, if they have it's possible that parents details and address might be noted.

I note that the reason you have discounted the William born 1872 is that his date of birth doesn't match what you believe it to be, based on his marriage certificate
about 17th.December 1876
You also say that he was at
St.George's Everton School in June 1880
but that his brother David was
at St.Georges Everton Infant School on 12th.August 1880
The usual age for a child to move up from the Infant school to what we would have called the "Juniors" would have been five years old. So if he was born in 1876 I would have suspected that he would also have been in the infants in 1880. So my gut feeling is that he was older than he said at his marriage.

I do see a birth for a William George Anderson, Q1 1872 Liverpool 8b 14. I don't see a birth for a William George in 1876. I think the way to resolve it is with the 1872 birth certificate, which if you order using the proviso that the parents names are George Anderson and Bessie Thompson, if this was incorrect then they would charge you only half of the fee for the search, refunding you the remainder.

I was interested to read the above posts as I had not seen the earlier ones before

Bessie ( Elizabeth ) Nanson Thompson was the sister of my gt gt grandfather
She was born 1841 in Annan Dumfries. and moved to Liverpool in 1842 with her parents and 8 siblings

She married George Anderson on 5th July 1870 at Walton St Mary's
George was recorded as a widower but I have been unable to find his first marriage

Their son William Anderson was born on 29th November 1873 at 191 Gt. Homer St. the home of his grandmother Isabella Thompson

I have not been able to work out where David Alexander Anderson fits into the family
His birth was registered in Q1 1874 so within 4 months of Williams birth

He died on 3rd August 1880, aged 6 , at the Anderson family home in Heyworth St. Everton and was described as the son of George Anderson

George Anderson's occupation was given as butcher 1871-1891, furniture broker in 1901. and at the time of his death in 1905 as licensed broker

George was buried with Bessie, who died in 1889, in Toxteth Park Cemetery

There's a George Anderson that married an Isabella Smith

1860 West Derby, Register Office or Registrar Attended Liverpool REG_WD/19/11 .

1861 census

Source Citation: Class: RG9; Piece: 2689; Folio: 107; Page: 20; GSU roll: 543013

He's a Seaman, Merchant Service of ?

There's a death for an Isabella Anderson, West derby 1868 though has her birth year as being c1841, when the 1 on the census was born c 1835. Both these 2 were born in Scotland.

I did come across that couple when I was looking for George and his first wife but decided against them

In 1851 George was living with his parents, David and Anne, in Aberdeen
He was 14 and his occupation was a flesher ? butcher

In 1861 the same family is in Liverpool ( if it is the correct family )
George is 24 unmarried and occupation shipwright

This would mean he married and his wife died between 1861 and 1870 but I still cant work out where David Alexander came from ....... George might have been his father but Bessie certainly wasn't his mother !

Hello Tina

I have been waiting for some more information before returning with an update but this is what I have found so far .....

The details I had for the 1873 Anderson birth came from BMD notices in the Liverpool Mercury which only give the name of the child's father
As I recognised the address I very wrongly assumed it to be the birth of William. After going through everything again, I realised it was the birth of David Alexander .... born in November 1873 and registered at the beginning of 1874

Then it was back to William and his birth registration. I have sent for the birth cert for William George 1872 Q1 and that should arrive later this week
His birthday is known to have been 17th December so probably 1871 and registered beginning of 1872
This would make his given age on the 1881 & 1891 census correct

I am now in contact with I.D.Anderson and we are putting our family information together which is really good

Many thanks to everyone for your time and interest
I have enjoyed reading the forum for a long time but this encouraged me to become a paid member
so maybe I will be able to join in
