My name is Orritt I was born in Oswestry Shropshire UK in 1952. My mother Hilda May (Oliver) was born in 1908 and my father Robert William Orritt was born in 1910 - both unfortunately deceased. I have a brother Denzil Orritt who lives in Oswestry UK and a sister Margaret who also lives in Oswestry. I now live overseas but have a house in Somerset UK I know the name orritt comes from Liverpool area as I have found alot of connections through there.
Would be interested for your news and if you would like any more from me you would be most welcome.

Hello NM,
I wonder if I might be of help. I live in Burscough - hence the N-d-P!!
There are still several families here and one of them is very keen on local history, so I have a feeling that a family tree will be in existence.
There is also the churchyard at St John the Baptist which could be examined
R U interested or do you already have this info??

Hanna Orritt & Hugh Orritt

by James Hewitt
Hanna Orritt was married to John Hewet and they had five sons. Per England Christenings March 1701-March 1760, Norman Collection, Salford,(sic) England, these five sons were christened at St. Elphin’s, Warrington, Lancashire, England as follows:
1. Thomas March 26, 1740
2. Joseph Sept. 12, 1742
3. John Jan. 22, 1744
4. Edward Sept. 1 1745
5. William Dec. 17, 1749
According to family stories, John Hewet died prior to the birth of William and Hanna Hewet died shortly after William’s birth. Thomas, Joseph, John and Edward were sent to the work house and William was sent to live with an uncle. William was apprenticed to the weaver’s trade at age 14 then joined the army.
William enlisted into the Kings Own 23rd of foot, Royal Welch Fusiliers on Dec. 26, 1767. On March 3, 1771 William married Dorothy Andrews at St. Elphin’s in Warrington while on recruiting duty. The marriage certificate bares the signature of Hugh Orritt as one of two witnesses.
William and Dorothy had a son also named William who died 9 months later on Aug. 13, 1772. On March 23, 1773 William Hewitt’s Regiment was shipped to America arriving at New York, on April 14, 1773, then on to Boston in Aug. 1774. My theory is that Dorothy died on board ship enroute to America. William deserted On March 17, 1775 and later married Sarah King in New Ipswach, New Hampshire. No further record has been found related to the first wife Dorthy.
William and Sarah’s first born son was also named William. Their son William later wrote that his father, William Hewett (from Warrington, England) had a middle name of Orritt so, he named his son William Orritt Hewett after his father.
I am assuming that Hanna Hewet's maiden name was Orritt baised upon the above information. In order to validate my assumption, I need help to find the records of Hanna Orritt’s Birth Marriage and death as well as records of Hugh Orritt, presumed to be the uncle who cared for William.
Thank you
James Hewitt

Hi Northmeols,
Only just noticed your posting re Orritt.
I recently researched the ancestry of a relative of my husband, his mother's line was Bond from Altcar, Lancashire. Two Bond sisters married two Orritt brothers!.
Margaret Bond b. 1901 Altcar, married Edmund Orritt b.1896 Lathom, at St.Michael and all Angels Church, Altcar, in 1925.
Her sister Bertha b 1904 Altcar. married Thomas, b 1900 Lathom, brother of Edmund,
Edmund and Thomas were the sons of John (1856 Lathom) and Margaret (1858 Downholland) Orritt, nee Leatherbarrow, who in 1911 were living Delph Farm, Lathom.
Margaret and Bertha were the daughters of Richard Bond b. 1847 Altcar, and annie Talyor born 1864 Altcar.
Unfortunately, I haven't any details of children born to these two couples!

Hello
I am a descendant of John Orritt and Ellen Orritt. They are my great great great grandparents on my mothers side. Although I have the birth date for John as 10/07/1814 and date of death as 1870. For Ellen I have date of birth 1819 and date of death 1884.
John and Ellen had a son - John Orritt (born 1855/died 20/05/1912) - lived at Delph Farm, Lathom with his wife Margaret Leatherbarrow.
John and Margaret had a son Thomas Orritt (born 17/11/1900) - he married my Great grandmother Eliza Bertha Bond - born 31/05/1903. (it is true that two Bond Sisters married two Orritt brothers)
I never met my Great Grandfather (Thomas) however I was very close to my Great Grandmother Eliza Bertha (known to her family and friends as Bertha - although her husband called her Bert!).
Thomas and Bertha had two children
John Orritt and Glenys Orritt (my Nana)
Glenys Orritt married my Grandad - Bob Sephton and they have three children, Robin, Margaret and Gillian. Gillian is my mum and she still lives in Thomas and Bertha's house in Haskayne, West Lancashire.
If I can help with your search anymore, please let me know.

I've only just found this site. My maiden name was Susan Orritt.
My father was Herbert Orritt born Southport 1933, died 2007. His father was John Orritt born southport 1902, died 1987. John's father was Thomas Orritt born Southport 1878. Thomas' mother was Alice Orritt born about 1857 (it appears he was illegitimate! and used his mother's name). Also discovered that Alice's parents were John Ball born Southport 1830 and Margaret Orritt born Latham about 1835. Alice was born out of wedlock but christened I think as Orritt. On early census results she used the surname Ball (1881) including her two children John and Thomas!! to possibly avoid embarrasment, but changed her surname and her sons to Orritt (taken from her mother Margaret) from 1891 onwards for some reason.
Alice's father, John Ball married Margaret Orritt (transcribed as Horrat on marriage cert and aged 33) in 1868 at St Paul's Southport. On the certificate it states that John's father is Peter Ball (town bellman). I've since discovered that an historical novel was written about Peter called Peter the Bellman!!
I'm now trying to discover more about Margaret Orritt. There is a Margaret Orritt christened 3/10/1835 at St Peter and Paul. She is the daughter of John Orritt, a farmer in Latham, and Rachael. (There is a marriage in 1834 of a John Orritt and Rachael Lowe) I'm not sure if this is the right connection so would appreciate if anyone can help me prove I'm on the right track. Thanks

Hi and welcome to the forum.
Although it's quite a while since our original poster was on the site, she remains a member of the Society so I hope she receives notification that you have responded to her post and returns to give her response. Meantime perhaps some of our other members may be able to give some suggestions.

Hi
I am also related to the Orritt's in the northwest, although I can't see an obvious connection with any of the post's below.
John Orritt, my 3rd great grandfather, was born 02/11/1820 in Ormskirk.
Son of a Paviour, Ralph Orritt, he too worked as a Paviour and married Ann Ruffley - 29/09/1845.
They had at least 4 children: Mary, John 1849?, Letitia and Sarah and lived in Dickenson Street, Ormskirk.
I can't seem to trace Dickenson Street; any local knowledge would be welcome.
Their eldest child Mary Orritt born 03/08/1846, married George Jones, a flax dresser - 25/06/1868 and had a daughter Ann Orritt Jones baptised 11/08/1872.
Ann, an Ormskirk girl, married Henry Harward Ball, my great grandfather who worked in Liverpool on 18/10/1899.
A lot of the above dates are taken from the excellent records of St Peter and Paul.
If this family is connected to anyone please do get in touch,
Regards
Jon Harward Ball

Hi and welcome to the forum. Just a hint that if you find a street name in a census, it's often a good idea to turn to the first page of the folio where you should find the Enumerator's Walk which will list the order the census was taken in. It adds a little help to finding a particular sreet.
