Researching my Grandfather and back.
Researching my Grandfather and back.
Hi, I am new to this site and send Best Wishes to all for Christmas and the New Year. I am trying to start researching back from my grandfather, who I did not know too well whose name was George Brereton. The surname is a well known name in Cheshire heritage which information on I am able to find out about very easily. All I know about my grandfather is that he ran, and then had to run from rather quickly, I believe, the Pontac Pub in Tom Mann St. off Christian St. off St Joseph St. at the back of what was The Polytech in Byrom St, now part of John Moores Uni. He maried, my Nanna, whose name was Margaret, nee, I think Kelly, they had two boys, my Uncle George and my Dad, Francis Joseph, I think born in 1913 and went to St. Francis Xaviers College. After doing the runner, they moved to Birkenhead. I was born, the eldest of three boys and one girl, in 1939 and think Dad married Mum in 1938, she was Eleanor Bowe.
My Dad died in 1972 and I think my Grandfather about 1952, in Birkenhead. I live, most of the time in Spain, and am fairly new to computers. If anyone can give me any guidance I would be most gratefull.
Happy Christmas, Felicitas Navidas. Tony Brereton, with thanks.

Hi George
To work backwards from your grandad George we must know more about him as the name seems fairly common.
Where was he born? How old was he when he died? Where did he die?
Where was he married?
Freebmd gives a marriage of George Brereton probably to either Margaret Kelly or Margaret McAvoy, both marriages registered in West Derby in the September quarter 1907.
Lancashirebmd gives details of the Brereton/Kelly marriage at St. Marys, Edge Hill, registers at Liverpool, Ref. 2043WD/15/456
I would suggest you get a copy of each certificate and you'll start to get some facts from which to work backwards.

Thank you Rob for your prompt reply, I think you have certainly located my Grandad and Nanie. She was Margaret Kelly and I shall see if I am able to find any other information. I know he was a seaman out of Liverpool and ran, fora time a pub in Lierpool. They moved to Birkenhead which is where he died in the early fifties. You have made my night!

I cannot believe the replies I have had to posting my limited information that I have on my Grandfather, George Brereton, a common name in Cheshire but I am intrigued to find out how he arrived in Liverpool. I am, rather new to computers and the web etc. but cannot believe the interest you all have to help others. I have just read Scottie Rd,in Scottie Press and laughed at some of the comments I read. Agh eh Mum etc! I did work in Liverool, two pubs I well remember on opposite corners, of Great Howard St. were The Bull, great, and the Brown Cow,lousyAmazingly a bloke from Mexico was one of the first people to reply and has given me a list of addresses to contact for information but if any of you Scottie Roaders can find any info about the PontaC or PontacK I would love it. He evidently,Gramps, George and Margaret Brereton did a runner! To the One eyed city, Birkenhead! About maybe 1925 or later I know my Dad had an older brother , my lovely Uncle George who seved in the RAF in India as I think a Radio Technician on,yes Spitfires and was well known in Birkenhead. A guyfrom Mexico who had relations in the Wirral replied and said that when the Liverpudlians reply you will get swamped . Loved all I have read up to now. More Scouse Humour PLEASE> tony brereton

Hiya Tony,
Did you read your other posting about the pub?
To try to get further back with our grandad and his family, you will need to perhaps get a copy of his marriage cert, to then get his father's name and occupation.
You may not be aware of sites that many of us use to get birth marriage and death records, also census records.
The BMD records are free to search on www.ancestry.co.uk/ census records are from 1841-1901 and the 1881 is free to search.
If you get the marriage cert of your grandparents, then post the details on here, we can then try and help further.
All the best.

Think there should be a sticky thread for sites that peeps use, and that peeps can add links to? There's been a couple of people in the past few days enquiring about sitesYou may not be aware of sites that many of us use to get birth marriage and death records, also census records.

George Brereton,
Hi all, I am flabergasted at the info from you all, I cant take it all in. The info on the Pontack and yes Jan, my grandfather died in 1951 in St Catherines Hospital, and would have been 75. Collette, yes that is my Uncle George who died in Birkenhead in, aged 42 and my Father Francis born in 1913 and died aged 59 in Wallasey. The address is 82 Watson st, there was another radio/cycle shop at 78 or 80. My gtandfather was a seaman but I dont know about the Royal Navy. By the looks of it you have all found my GGF as well, also George. The family definately came from Middlewich or Nantwich. I will get all your info together and probably close the Pontack subject as it was the only location I knew of in Liverpool. You are all teaching me a lot and thank you everone. Tony Brereton.
Oh most definitely you need to be looking this up. The Admissions and Attendance Registers are held in the Liverpool Records Office and will give you details of whether he is an orphan and who is supporting him, baptisms etc.George is at the Blue Coat School says age 12 should be 13-14
