24 Byrom St Liverpool

Hello all
Rooting through old papers I have come across an extract from ' A Directory of English Pubs in the 1881 census'. The extract concerns a property 24 Byrom St and in view of the heading I presume it must have been a pub of some sort. Can anyone tell me please if it had a name and any more info they might be able to obtain. I have searched the net but can find nothing. It would seem that the occupant was James Wilson who was previously at the Compass and Anchor.

Hi Peter,
Haven't found a name for it yet, it is recorded as a Wine & Spirit Vault in some directories.
The Electoral Rolls record it as just house and the 1864/65 roll has Richard Richmond linked to 24 Byrom St and 51 Scotland Rd, 51, being of previous interest.

So far as I know the library (and hopefully the archives) may be opening in a week or so time, I believe there is a list of pubs with the changes in licensees. Sounds like that might be a good thing for you to check as he may also have been at other places.

Difficulty logging in and the loss of three drafts due to computer failure have delayed the further post. The passage of time means I have forgotten what I was going to say but I can remember some bits.
Mary - I have started email correspondence with Lpl museums and galleries
Bert - gone are the things I was going to say but please let me know if anything turns up. Any snippets are welcome

Sorry about the problems logging in, this seems to be an intermittent problem that we have been unable to successfully overcome, although all tends to go well for about a month before another malfunction. I do tend to copy whatever I write if it's going to be quite a paragraph as something inadvertently might just happen, such as the user hitting an incorrect button (it has been known, so not always the site's fault

) and keep a copy until it has posted ok.
