Marks in Liverpool - Rate Books?

Post by russellci »

One day my brick wall will fall! John Marks, mariner, only appears in 1841 census - died 1849. Have no idea when he and his family arrived in Liverpool (despite the census!) and somebody suggested Rate Books for the period 1800 - 1850? Do such things exist?
Thanks as always

I have moved your post from the FAQ Board to the Liverpool Board so that it will be better seen.

I think it would be a good idea if you checked the 1841 census, which you say he's on and see whether it states if he was born in Ireland or just another county.

The Rate Books are most likely to be held at the Liverpool Record Office, however, I'll look in the Directories I hold.

1825, no entry.
1827 Gores Directory Marks John, shoemaker, 10, Downe street
Marks Mary, teacher, 23, Sidney place, Edge hill
Marks Rebecca, shopkeeper, Edge hill place, Edge hill

1843
Marks Edward Tailor and Draper, 127 Whitechapel
John, Lodging House, 17 Blundell Street
John, Shopkeeper, 67 Eldon Street,
Leon, Watchmaker, 83 Park Lane
Mark, Tailor and Draper, 82 Oldhall Street
Mary and Kitty, Boarding House, 15 Mount Pleasant
Phoebe, 24 King Street, Edge Hill

I know there are more details than you needed but you never know whether one of the entries might relate to your family.
