Kirkdale cemetery grave records

I have been having hours of endless fun going through the newly published England & Scotland, Select Cemetery Registers, 1800-2016 on Ancestry.

It has helped me tie up a few loose ends, deaths and burials etc. However, it has also caused a bit of a headache, with Orritts and Orretts being in the same grave. Some are probably transcription errors, other times it may be members of another Orrett family in the same grave.

I know that I can go to Crosby library for all of my Ford cemetery records, but is there somewhere similar for Kirkdale cemetery, where this conundrum is?

Thanks, John

John,

Where shared graves occur, perhaps back tracking to see the version of name used during life may be found. Whoever made the recording may have chose the wrong spelling?

Thanks Bert, surnames changed during the life of the person. My father was written as Orritt on his birth certificate, even though his father was an Orrett. My father had to legally change his back to Orrett when he got married. At this stage I am just looking to find out who is in this particular grave. I'm sure I have seen the headstone, but according to the registers, there must be more people in the grave than named on the stone.

Thanks for the link Bert, but does not give details. I have used that site before to good effect when researching.

Difficult to answer that, but I don't think there would be a better site than that Bert has given.

I just want to say that Allerton Cemetery Lodge is very good with a map identifying the location of particular graves in Kirkdale Cemetery them if you ask them to, and I have even known them to contact the gardeners who have left a marker when there is no headstone.

Just a word of warning also, one of our forum members has posted on Facebook that she discovered a burial listed on the new records in Ancestry that took place about 8 years before the death of the person   yes of course transcription errors abound on this new database and there appear to be many mistakes.

Thanks Mary, I have the location of the grave, having visited it earlier this year. It would appear that the headstone does not name everyone who is buried there. Unfortunately Bert's link that he very kindly provided only has the transcriptions, not who else could be in there.

I know Crosby library has the microfiche records for the grave numbers at Ford, and that gave me additional interments in one that were not mentioned on the headstone. I just wondered if something similar was available for Kirkdale or whether the records office could help, as I know the grave details.

Seasons greetings, John.

I think Ford/Yew Tree/Ainsdale is a one-off since the reverse look up was done at the time of transcription rather than purchase.

Hi, if memory serves me right, I went looking for these records and was told that all Kirkdale records were deposited at Liverpool Central Library and that's where I found them, its been many years since I saw them but I think it was in the form of Maps of areas depending on religion. I will check my folders tomorrow to jog my memory. I'll be in touch.

familsearch has burial order books 1881-1901 and burial registers 1890 - 1911 for Kirkdale Cemetery online.
