Looking for any information on Agnes Whitton, born 8th May 1856,at Paget Street, in the district of St. Martin, Liverpool. Her father was Thomas Whitton, and her mother was Isabella Whitton, late Hopwood.
I can find no trace of her after this event. I would appreciate any help!

Well done Bert, I'm thinking perhaps a Non Conformist church or some such, the Scotch Church, St Andrews, has no marriages, but perhaps you could try some of these for the marriage.

Hope Street Unitarian 288 HOP 3
Oldham Street Scotch Church 285 OLD
St John's Wesleyan Methodist Church, Princes Park 287 LSO 19
Stanhope Street Wesleyan Methodist Church 287 LMM 4

These are the only ones in the Handbook that list marriages held at the appropriate date.

Thank you Mary A and Bert, for your research. With regards to the possible marriage, I obtained the cert.( which has been mislaid ), but the father of Agnes Whitton on the cert. is not the right name or occupation. This cert. could possibly relate to the other Agnes Whitton who was born in the same year and quarter in Liverpool, whose father had a different first name and occupation. On recollection, I could have passed this cert. on to George Highton. On the1871 census there are two Agnes Whitton, one in Idle, aged 16, and one in Liverpool, aged 15, living in Walton Road, Everton, saying that she was born in Scotland. I have found this on other censuses, and proved that the people were born in Everton area, Could this have been a local “term “ Our Agnes’s father, Thomas Whitton , a Ship’s Joiner, was living in Great Howard Street, aged 52, on the 1871 census. Thank you again.

Hi Pete,

According to the GRO only one Agnes Whitton was born in Liverpool 1856, -/+2 mmn Ross.

I can't find the other one, 1871 census, Walton Rd.

Pity about the marriage cert, is it likely George would still have it?

Have you tracked the Agnes on it?

No idea about "Local term" query, always thought it was just a possible enumerators error.

It appears the Agnes married to James Findlay, Police Officer, is on the 1901 Scottish census with her children, all born England.

Again she is recorded as being born Scotland.

Just a comment about the Certificate - we have a new officer to take over the Donated Certificates post, she and our Chairman are currently tidying up the database and details of where to post them to will be available very soon.

According to Free BMD there were two Agnes Whittons born in Liverpool in 1856, in the June quarter,The correct one is 8b 50, for which I obtained the birth certificate. On the 1871 census, she is aged 15, a servant, living with a family named Wilson, on 107 Walton Road, but her surname is spelled WITTON, as is the one in Idle, Yorks. It is after this census I can find no trace of her. I googled 'Liverpool, Scotland' , and found that the area she lived in was the Scotland Ward of the city. This could have caused confusion.. I had the same problem with another branch of the family living in the Scotland Ward, wrongly entered on the census form. I will follow up your suggestion that she may have emigrated. Once again, thank you for your help!

Pete.

Pete,

The Australian connection is the Findlay family and would think the marriage cert dismisses this Agnes.

The 2 entries on FREEBMD for Agnes Whitton 1856 take you to the same page.

One is very poorly filmed and difficult to read. It is however the same page by reference to the entries that can be read more easily.

This looks a likely one:

1881, 101 Ferry Road, Dundee
Agnes Whitton, Servant, Unmarried, Female, 24, 1857, Table Maid, England

From Scotlands People:
Marriages, 1883
Agnes Whitton to James Paton Byers, St Andrew (Dundee)

1901, 5 Balfour Street, Dundee
James Byers, Head, Married, Male, 49, 1852, House Painter, Kirriemuir

James Williams Byers, Son, Single, Male, 17, 1884, Engineer's Apprentice, England
Isabella Ross Byers, Daughter, Single, Female, 15, 1886, Laundry Worker, England

The GRO indexes have the following births:

Well done, Alison, Bert, and Mary A. You have demolished the brick wall ! Agnes Whitton’s mother was christened Isabella Ross,
Agnes has named her daughter after her mother. The name Ross crops up time and again in our research. I have a grandson named Ross, who lives in Dundee. Such a coincidence. Once again, thank you very much indeed.
