Name Changing
Grandad
Looking For some help and ideas on my grandfather/father who is a big part of my family ancestry he was born Edward Smith on 4 Oct 1886 Maghull Liverpool. 1901 census still Edward but in 1916 he married under the name of Hendry Clarendon Smith on the wedding certificate he also gave the wrong age and his father’s name changed from Thomas Edward Smith to Thomas Hendry Smith. When my mother his daughter passed away he and my grandmother adopted my sister and myself in August 1948 the adoption papers where he signed under the name of Harry Clarendon Smith we lived with them until I was around 10 years old when my grandmother/mother passed away we moved away and I more or less lost touch with my grandfather I know very little about him and find it hard to find out with all his name changing and secrecy. I do have a Mercantile Marine 1914-1918 medal presented to Hendry C Smith. Can anybody help or tell me the best way to go.

Re: Name Changing
Hi Smudge,
At Ellen Maria Smith's marriage to John Thomas Williams, 1912.
Father, Thomas Edward Smith was recorded, deceased and occupation Warehouseman.
Is the information the same on Henry Clarendon Smith's marriage cert, deceased and Warehouseman?

Re: Name Changing
I'm puzzled, I had a quick look for his on seamans details yesterday, unfortunately didn't have enough time to come up with anything, especially Bert has done wonderfully well, but I don't think your post was on here
Did you post on Facebook and then remove it?

Hi Bert
Well Bert thanks for coming on so quick it will take a little time for me to catch up with you but I do appreciate your time. Answer to your first question Bert yes on his sister’s wedding cert Thomas Edward Smith deceased and warehouseman yet on His Harry Clarendon Smith/ Catherine Roberts wedding cert father Thomas Hendry Smith deceased, Clerk. again why? What was he trying to hide? And succeeded in. Most of the other stuff like you said I have Bert, he died as Harry Smith in Walton hospital 1973. I would just like to know what he had to hide or cover and thanks for the information on the medal. Thanks to you to Mary, maybe you saw it on email? This is all new to me so I am making mistakes

Re: Name Changing
Smudge,
The time period might suggest he was trying to dodge the Army catching up with him, but if he was already a seaman prior to the war and call up, that would blow that theory out of the water I suppose.
What led you from Harry Clarendon to Edward, family info?
What address did he marry from?

Re: Name Changing
Smudge,
Nothing in Wylie St I could see around that time to ring bells.
Mystery remains unfortunately.
Any idea when he did start going away to sea?

Re: Name Changing
Smudge,
I can't post all of the record and I can't say for sure this is your Edward/Henry C.
Note the date of birth, he seems to have always been consistent with the date if not the year.

Perhaps the following image may give reason for the name change, Run,1914, possibly avoiding the Royal Navy?

Re: Name Changing
Hi Bert
What a great find 99% the right record and it seems to be the answer. From the run in 1914 and wanting to get married in 1916 he had to change his name. What ever the reasons making him run he managed to stay free. He had 2 sons who both went to sea one in the Royal Navy (survived the war) the other in the merchant navy (killed in action on the SS Beatrice 27 July 1944 age 24) “what a waste”. Sorry back to Edward he was a good hard working docker after the war. I met him once when in his early 70s he was on his way to work as a cocky watchman on a building site I couldn’t believe it. If only we could turn the clock back I have so much to ask him now. Anyway thanks very much Bert for all your help. I will be back with some more query’s I hope you and L.S.W.L.F.H. will be able to help me with them. Smudge
