Members have helped me before with this family and perhaps they could do so again. The facts I have are these - George Naden (Snr) died June Qtr 1905. Sophia Naden, his wife died Sept Qtr 1895. They are the parents of George (Jnr). The 1901 census for 16 Derby Place shows George (Jnr) and his wife Eliza, with him living on his own means. Presumably this means he had money but I cannot find anything to suggest that either his mother or father had given or willed him any cash or assets. The 1911 census for 53 Leinster Rd shows Eliza as head with the children. George (Jnr) is at 9 Cedar Rd Walton and is designated a visitor. Does this information suggest they have separated or not? George died 13 December 1924 at 107 Rice Lane which I understand to be a hospital or similar institution. He was living at 1 Long Avenue Walton which does suggest that George and Eliza have gone their separate ways sometime between 1901 and 1911 though possibly later.
Any information members can give me about the comings and goings of this family would be most welcome.

As you know, the census is recorded only over 1 night, therefore Eliza would be the head and George would be classed as a visitor.

If George was a permanent fixture, perhaps he would have been recorded as lodger or boarder.

Living on own means, 1901, doesn't always mean someone of wealth, perhaps living on savings whilst in between jobs? no benefits in those days.

The problem with census information, a week before or a week later, information could be different.

Thanks for the clarification re the census. So I cannot assume that in 1910 they were living apart but your electoral role note confirms, I think, that they were apart in 1920. If memory serves me the person he was visiting was a commercial traveller, the same occupation as his so a single night away seems highly likely. Presumably 1920 is as far back as Electoral Roles go. Living on own means explains why Leonard was also so described. As a young man he could well be between jobs. None of the Long Avenue names ring any bells. Interesting that Eliza has now become Elizabeth. I wonder why the change. May have to wait for the next census to progress matters.

When the Prescot registration district pops up unexpectedly we often do associate it with Rainhill which is a great source of information, possibly even a photograph. I would suggest that you contact the Liverpool Record Office, giving the above information, phrase it as a certainty rather than a possibility, and mark your message for the attention of Roger and it wouldn't do any harm to say you are a member of our Society and have been referred by one of the Help Desk. He is always good enough to check to see if there is an entry and will let you know so that you can book it and visit to see for yourself. If you do, don't forget to take either your camera or a flash drive as you will be able to use their scanner.

Dear Mary, - thanks for your efforts with the search. The Elizabeth you have found is indeed our Eliza who was living with her daughter at the time of her death. I wish I could do as you suggest and get to the reference library which is no doubt full of information that would be useful to me but a 250 mile expedition from home is more than the family would permit. Indeed an outing to the post office, one mile away, seems to require a written application. I am keen to find out as much as I can about George as I have got quite a bit of info about the generations before and after and he does not appear to have run a disciplined ship nor given sufficient guidance to his children. Please just keep your eyes open. Sooner or later we will get to the bottom of his activities. Peter
