Hi all, I'm trying to determine the birth of my great grandmother. The census records have her as being born about 1854/57 in Liverpool. Parents were Edward and Bridget Montague.

I can find a reference of a baptism in St Augustine Liverpool in March 1855, but it states birth place as Saltney. Would this be likely, as I thought that was Chester way? Her surname has been written as Montague, McTague, McTigue and McTighe, so checking records is as usual problematic.

I have also lost her in the 1911 census There is a Bridget McKeon, widow, residing at 5 Tarleton Street Liverpool (I believe the Caernarfon arms pub). However, it states she is aunt of John Fagan, who I have no record of in my tree. She died in 1926 and although there are a couple of records in 1920 and 1925 in Liverpool, England, Electoral Registers, 1832-1970, I cannot prove it was her.

There's a baptism of a Francis Joseph Montague at St Augustine's in 1858, same parents, 4 Saltney Street.

Thanks for the swift response. I had completely forgotten that I had started a thread in 2017! Looking at the baptismal record, I have just noticed that at the top of the page, where it says 'where born', a lot of the pages have written underneath that, 'street', so great to find out that the church and home was near to each other and in Liverpool.

The 1858 entry for Francis Joseph (I had Francis in my tree but no exact date of birth or baptism) shows the parents as Edward Montague and Bridget McCourt. I have the mother as Bridget Conroy, so may have to revisit my tree. However, the godmothers of both Francis and Edward had the surname Bracken. The later entries (1856 - 1861) have the full details, the earlier years only have a line of detail with no Latin.

Looking at the previous post giving details of the death of George Montague, he could possibly be related. Bridget Montague's father was Edward, born 1827ish. If George was related, he would have been born about 1816, so too young to be the father of Edward, but maybe his brother? He is also in Ford cemetery, but looks like a public grave number 621.

Grave SP41 in Ford cemetery is definitely correct. After looking up at Crosby library, listed in the grave are: Patrick James Montague (son), Bridget Montague (mother), Edward Montague (father), Mary Dillon (related to the Montagues by marriage), Thomas McKeown and Bridget McKeon (my Bridget Montague and her brother Thomas).

Edward and Bridget were presumably married in Ireland, as Patrick (1841), Owen (1844), Mary Ann (1851) and Winifred (1852) are all shown on census returns as being born in Ireland. There is also an elusive son James, born 1853. There is a record of a baptism again at St Augustine's on 2nd July 1853, parents Edward and Bridget living at 64 Saltney Street. GRO has this: MCTIGUE, JAMES 0. GRO Reference: 1854 M Quarter in LIVERPOOL Volume 08B Page 32. I have tried all other alternatives of the spelling, so have to guess that this is him. On the 1861 census the rest of the family are all living at 4 Saltney Street and in 1871 in Dublin Street. I have just found a James Montague at 3 Saltney Street in the 1871 census, aged 8! The house is a boarding house. There is nothing against relation to head of family, just stating age and a scholar. I cannot see any birth record at allThere is a burial at Ford in August 1873 for him, age 10 and residence 2 Saltney Street and buried in what looks like SJ588. Time for another trip to Ford and Crosby library to see who else is in there..
