The Cabbage Inn, Netherton

Post by DenisOrmesher »

I am trying to find out more about The Cabbage Inn, Netherton.

My great grandparents ran the Cabbage Inn, Netherton pub from the 1880s to early 1900s (Michael McGinity and Elizabeth McGinity).

I have old photos of the pub, but it looks a different building to the current one, which looks derelict. I am happy to share these photos with anyone interested.

Does anyone have any info on;
- The Cabbage Inn - what happened to the old building, when was the current building built ?
- Michael McGinity - he married Elizabeth Mary Ormesher (nee Rimmer) in June 1878 - Ithink he was born in Ireland about 1850.

I hope someone can help.

I am new to Family Research - and using Ancestry.co.uk - any other tips would be welcome.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

One of our forum members may have access to the changes in Licenses and I hope he will check these to see what he can find out about when your family took over at the Cabbage.

As you say you are new to FH research you may like to browse through some tips we have put together here https://www.liverpool-genealogy.org.uk/ ... =25&t=6937

and also on our Society page, https://www.liverpool-genealogy.org.uk/ on the right hand side there is a link to download a Free Guide of hints and tips.

Just as an aside, I didn't know that the Cabbage had closed but it doesn't surprise me because of the recent downturn in trade in public houses, so many have gone that way.

I have checked a couple of directories 1881 Kellys and 1900 for Liverpool, unfortunately they are not listed, probably as Netherton may be outside the area for a Liverpool directory.

Mary has alerted me to this query, but the book I have (which is for 1909), does not have any entries for the roads named in this thread. As she has suggested, Netherton was probably outside the city at that time.

It looks like the inn was demolished and rebuilt nearby between 1927-1938:-

Maps always useful, thanks Blue and also Daggers for checking for Licensees.

Denis, you may find it useful to contact Crosby Library to ask them to check directories in the Sefton area.

My ancestors from Padiham were close to a family in the pub business. There are a HUGE number of stories about that family in local papers of the time available on the British Newspaper Archive. Stories include court reports of licence changes, the trial of a burglar, Christmas dinners for organisations, catering done for an agricultural show and bankruptcy proceedings. Perhaps they got this major coverage because Padiham was relatively small. There's no guarantee you will find similar, but it must be worth checking. The standard cost is £12.95 per month but 'First month for £1' offers pop up all the time; Mary posted details of one last week, although it expired on 4th Jan.

You can even search to see what's available without signing up:

'Cabbage Inn' enclosed in quotes; filtered on Liverpool:

Isn't it nice to meet an old friend on the boards.

Good thinking Luxor, but Denis beware that there are more than one Cabbage Inn, I did a quick search on the Old Newspapers and the first I opened was about the Cabbage Inn, Richmond Row - which I'd never heard of, but was very early ie 1844, this was probably the one off Williamson Square. There's also another one, still there I believe, in Anfield.

It's NOT Liverpool that you need in this instance.

Check the area that the British Newspaper Archives cover but I'm not confident that you will find anything in there unless it's a newspaper that covers Sefton/Bootle.

Hilary has posted some details of newspapers held at Crosby on microfilm https://www.liverpool-genealogy.org.uk/ ... newspapers scroll down the page a bit

Many Thanks for all the replies - and for the site for connecting me with an old friend Daggers !

Sire Admin - the tips were really useful - I will work through them and may come back to you if I have any ?s

Mary A - thanks for the census info - I had this (search via ancestry.co.uk) but had not spotted the significance of the Occupation - how did you get the info you have listed - did you retype it or can you cut and paste it from somewhere ? Could I access in the same way ?

Blue 70 - the maps are consistent with the photos I have - the old photos show the pub right on the corner of the junction as on the map - the current building is set a bit back from the corner, also shown on the map. How would I get access to these maps and to the Kelly's/Slater's Directories ??

You could just right click on those maps and save them to your computer and then print them.

Here is a link to all the directories on Ancestry:-

The census information I give is always typed, then copyright is mine and we don't breach any rules. You just copy and paste it into your own records from my post. The reason for always giving full details from a census image is that the incidental information, eg address, occupations and in particular birthplaces are very important for continuity.

You will find a large number of maps and a cabinet full of directories at the Liverpool Record Office, third floor William Brown Street Library.

From snowy Switzerland!

Try the Information and Reference Unit at Crosby Library they have a large and I mean large photographic collection which is slowly being digitised. They may well have a photo of the Cabbage Inn.

Hull Daily Mail, 12th February 1932, said that The Cabbage Inn at Sefton was to be replaced by a modern £6,000 hotel and Liverpool Magistrates Court had sanctioned the provisional transfer of its beer licence on the application of Mrs Mary Katherine McGinty.
