Hi all.

I'm curious to try to find out more about a) specific details of my Nan's war work and b) general social background of those employed in the Kirkby Munitions.

I have sketchy details but know she worked in Kirkby 'making bombs.' She hated the work and it's dangers. She dropped a shell on her toe which caused it to be deformed so assume she wasn't on 'high explosives!' I just wondered if any records would exist? She's passed on now so sadly no further opportunity exists.

however, I've never come across any records of employees, sorry. Someone else may have heard of some??

It's interesting isn't it, that it was such a huge part of the success of WW2 and we have access to so many military records nowadays, but noone can locate any (?) of these ROF employee records?! I imagine female conscription to war work must have been organised via the labour exchanges so it puzzles me these records aren't available. Maybe one day....!

You also need to think about the 100 year closure. So if any still exist they may not be available for quite sometime yet.

Yes, that crossed my mind as a reason and then I thought if I knew who held such records, whether they could be released upon proof of death. I did such a thing with the RAF not so long ago. Oh well, for now I'll satisfy myself reading up on the history about the work! That link is really quite interesting!
