Hi, I have done my hoovering, mopped the floors and now having a break before dusting.
Henry b 1801 in Ormskirk . Father Henry Manchester and mother Sarah Dean. He married Ellen Draper b c 1804 (I think in Aughton or Hawton) in Preston in May 1821. He was 19 and a wheelwright, she was 17. I think this is why the married aaway. In 1841 they were living at 24 Paul Place, Paul St . Liverpool with there family.
Henry Manchester 40 Born in county
Ellen Manchester 36 Born in county
Edward Manchester 18 All born in county
Sarah Manchester 15
Mary Manchester 13
Barbara Manchester 7
Alice Manchester 6
William Manchester 3
Barbara was their niece daughter of Josiah (Joseph) Manchester and Ellen Lydieth who had both died in the late 1830s.
The problem is I cannot find them in the 1851 or 1861 census.
The nearest I have is Thomas Manchester aged 60 and Ellen aged 55, both 10 years out. The children's ages are also out and I don't know who Fanny is. They were living in Gore st. North. I also cannot find Barbara in 1851. She married in 1853 in Prescot to George Marsh.

Fanny Manchester 12
Alice Manchester 10
William Manchester 9
James Manchester 8
Walter Manchester 4

Henry died in 1869 resident at 30 Kirkdale rd and a Grocer (That fits with "proprietor" in 1851 census for Thomas)
Ellen and her children Alice 39, James 29, Henry 19, are still at 30 Kirkdale rd in 1871 census. Ellen died 1878. Both were buried Ormskirk in the family grave, with headstone and coroberative MI.
Any help finding them in 1851 or 1861 would be helpful. Thanks a lot Lynne

I think you are right thinking this is your family with an error in the father's name. A baptism for a Margaret with the right parents, living Portland Street, (although there is a death the same year) matches the address and occupation on the baptism for Walter, however what concerns me is Ellen's birthplace given as Leeds, Yorkshire?

Yes! another baptism for Henry John Manchester, at St Peters, 17 November 1853, parents Henry and Ellen Manchester, address GORE STREET, occupation Wheelwright.

Mary's marriage in 1853 gives Gore Street.
William's marriage in 1864 gives the address of Horatio Street. Although not definitive it doesn't say that Henry is deceased.

Unfortunately no sign of them in Horatio Street in 1861, nor could I find them in the 1863 directory.

Henry isn't listed under Wheelwrights in 1860, I wonder if he had been ill for quite a while before he died?

Sorry for the negative results, but at least you know you aren't being ignored. :)

Mary, thanks. Negative results are just as important . It shows me I have not missed something obvious. Just a thought, did I remember something in the back of my mind that some 1861 censuses for Liverpool were missing. Henry died at 30 Kirkdale Rd as did his wife Ellen some 10 years later. I think they may have been there in 1861.
Thanks again Mary

I don't think you need to be logged into Findmypast to view this page which lists missing or damaged pieces of censuses.
https://www.findmypast.com/articles/cen ... ing-pieces

No Manchesters appear in Kirkdale Road, however if you want to "walk" the street yourself, which is quite a long one I think to see if the handwriting may be very misconstrued, this is the reference Archive reference RG09 Piece number 2720 Folio 81 Page 22, it takes you to about house number 79.

Thanks Alex and Mary. Tomorrow is another day off. I will look through those references. I hope I can use the references to find the correct place on Ancestry. If not, could some one give me a name close to where the ref is so I have a starting point. Thanks

Not in Kirkdale rd 1861. There is a provision dealer called ? Lee living there with his family. In 1867 Henry is described as a provision dealer in 1867 at 30 Kirkdale rd.
I wonder when he moved there? Was 30, Kirkdale Rd a shop?
Thanks Lynne

I have found census for Gore St and Gore St North. but the lowest number is 36 to 38 the Derby Arms . I have read through all the returns for these 2 roads , but no Manchester Family or Wheelwright. The neaarest address I have is 15 Gore St in 1853.
This is the link to the lowest numbers . Enumeration district 61. Can't get a transcription so no other details. I will look for north of Great Mersey St and see if it is there.

Unfortunately no 15 Gore Street listed in 1861 census.
