I'm Looking into a decendant William Hewson of Toxteth Park.

Born c1785-1844? (location unknown) he married Jane Reed or Reid 28/04/1808,
Private in the 3rd West Yorkshire Militia
They had a daughter Jane, born 25/6/1810 (my GGGrandmother)

But William was married to another Jane, Rowlands (1786-1866) 10/12/1809
He had a daughter Margaret born 9/9/1810 (and 4 of 5 subsequent children)
His occupation is now listed as Latherer or Stonemason.

Does anyone know who the 3rd West Yorkshire Milita were (Part of the army?) and where they would have gone?
Also what might have happened to the first wife? It seems William Hewson married again before his first child was born
and was with another Jane in the meantime. I don't see how this would happen.

It appears they are 2 different couples, both couples having had a child born within months of each other.

William Hewson who married Jane Rowlands was a Lath Cleaver, though skilled I don't believe he could have interchanged and became a Stonemason.

The couple on the 41 census, though not certain are likely to be William Hewson, 3rd West Yorkshire Militia/Stonemason, being born out of county.

"The Militia Act of 1757 called for the creation of militia regiments from each county for local defence. Men between the ages of 18 and 45 were listed for service, but if a man was called into service, a substitute could be paid to serve in his stead"

ahhh That makes sense, The first couple had a second daughter in 1819 called Matilda. I'm sure of this as she married Isaac Marsden who is the name of my Gran's granddad.
The second couple (Jane Rowlands) had a few children, Robert 1814, Christopher 1816 and Samuel 1830. It seemed to tie in to being one family.

Is the 3rd W.Yorkshire Militia from anywhere or mean he was likely from West Yorkshire?

They were usually local Militia, very likely born in the area.
