Are there any records available on folks who worked with title of Dock Gateman>
I would be interested to find anything about this job etc - name relevant would be Arthur Alexander Hand who appears to have been in that job from 1880s to death in 1906.

Thank you

To check the dockers who worked that day were only the ones supposed to work - not all dockers worked every day - if there were not enough ships coming in / going out to load, not all dockers were required every day .
Each Docker had his own Tally and had his own number - he had to produce this to get his wages AND the dockers were clocked in by the Gateman by their Number - not their name .

I believe also he would be a watchman, a kind of security guard. There would be ships lying at anchor and valuable goods stored in warehouses at the docks.

I don't think there would be specific records for him.

Hi

Thanks for that information Mary one of my Great Grandfather's was a Dock Gateman when he died in 1859 and I tried to find some info on him at the Maritime Museum but there was nothing on him.

Wonderful that a piece of info helps two people with the same query.
