Hi All

Quick question about the 1939 Register.

Does anyone know what the letters mean left of a name, which have been written in since the register was compiled.

I have PT 12. 152 ( could be 12.1.52 ) NVF and
H ( could be N ) VF 10.11.49

Help!

Erika,

NVF is the area code for, Huyton and Roby.

Guessing the numerical part are dates.

Not sure what PT means, PS would be Postscript, added later, so not that.

Thanks Bert. That makes sense, she moved to Huyton and I think the numbers must be dates, coincides with marriage.
Will try and sort out the other one.

PT with a date and a code means prior to the date shown the person registered with a doctor in that area.
If there is the letter M with a date and and area code and a change of surname that means that the woman registered her married name with her doctor and was probably married shortly before that date.
Trust this information helps.

Hi folks - I have just joined the forum and spotted this thread. I also have a question about notes on the 1939 Register. My first cousin is showing on the register. She was only a few months old at the time. Her surname has been crossed out and a new one entered in green ink. To the left of her name there is an entry "FPIA" and what looks like a date of 3.4.81. My cousin moved to Canada with her parents when she was a child so I am a bit mystified why an alteration would be made - particularly if it was over 42 years later. Any idea how I can find out why her name was amended?

Name amendment is likely to be, her married name.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

The 1939 Register was taken on the eve of war and was used amongst other things for ID Cards, Ration Books etc. and later upkept by the NHS.

As Bert says the usual reason for an amendment would be a change of name due to marriage however I would need to enquire whether anybody with more knowledge knows what the letters mean.

Can you look into the marriage suggestion and let us know as we aren't aware of any other reason for the name change.

I have searched for a marriage but cannot find one either here or in Canada. I have since found the NA guidance on the register which says info from overseas was not updated. I also noticed that given she was only a few months old when the register was compiled her record should be blacked out unless her death has been registered. But again given she was living in Canada this should not have happened. So it remains a bit of a mystery.

So the initials FPIA mean

As notified to Family Practitioner Information Authority. (Predecessor to Health Authorities) so this with the date is when the Authorities were told about name change.
