I have mentioned this family before and you have helped me . I'll put the links at the end.
In the 1841 census there are 2 families of GODSO in Liverpool. William Gordon Godsoe b 1799 Liverpool? with his wife Jane (Fell from IoM) and James Whitney Godsoe b 1809 St Johns New Brunswick with his wife Isabella (White b 1814 Liverpool)
Deep down, I believe they are related, especially as the father of James is called James Gordon Godsoe b c 1779 new Brunswick and his wife Eleanor Whitely who were married St Johns New Brunswick c 1808. He was a mariner. Now the best bet I have for William Gordon Godsoe's father is also called James Gordon Godsoe , but his names were put in the opposite order when he married Ellin Jackson in St Annes Liverpool in Mar 1798 He was also a mariner. They only appeared to have 1 child, but I cannot find what happened to Ellin.
Could it be he had a wife in Liverpool and another in St Johns.?
If any one could access the Canadian records I would love help there. Thanks Lynne

Is it likely the same mistake has been made twice, 2 years apart at 2 different churches?

James Gordon married Ellen Jackson, 1797, St Anne

William Godsoe Gordon, baptised, 1799, parents, James Gordon/Ellen Jackson, St Nicholas.

I agree Bertie, I don't think they were mistakes. I have looked at the originals and they definitely sat James Godsoe Gordon. William his son was always in marriage, census , baptism of children etc. known as William Gordon Godsoe. I still think James was the same person and just changed his names around. Is there any sign of any other siblings for William, or a death for Ellen or her husband ? I cannot find any.

I can't get one hit for James Godsoe Gordon or James Gordon Godsoe (Ellen Jackson) anywhere, Ancestry World, Canadian records, etc. Unless I'm missing something, I'm leaning towards Gordon being the family name as James signed at his marriage to Ellen Jackson.

Possibly the Godsoe, William Godsoe Gordon was from ancestral connections and it was William who decided to use Godsoe as a surname, reasons we'll probably never know.

No luck with deaths either.
