Please note if you can help, this is not my enquiry so you can post findings on here if you wish but any results should be forwarded to the library contact at the bottom of this post.
Local historian Dr John Rowlands is looking to find information about a possible mystery relative of John Lennon, who lived in Maghull.
In December 1944 John lived with his uncle Sydney in Cedar Grove Maghull, for a short period.
In a St Andrew’s parish magazine dated 1945, listing the soldiers to be included on the new lych-gate, there is mention of a Lennon at the family address, but no initial or first name.
If you can help Dr Rowlands with any information about this mystery ‘Lennon’ who perished in WW2, please email

I've sent an e-mail. I don't think it's a relative. None of the uncles died in the war, the cousins were too young. I'm wondering if this really is about a Lennon death in the war linked to John's uncle Sydney's family at 27 Cedar Grove, Maghull, West Lancs. I'd like to know more and have asked for more information about the parish magazine and the lych gate. I've also mentioned a Lydiate born Lennon family who were baptising their children at St Andrew's Maghull 1906 to c1920s just in case one of them has been mixed up with John's uncle's family.

I feel sure from previous experience of your research that you will be on the right route, so I'm sure the library/author will appreciate your comments - or at least from previous experience of other authors, I HOPE he appreciates them.

No response yet. I've looked at all the Lennons in the West Lancs area in 1939. There was John's uncle Sydney, his wife Florence and daughter Joyce at 27 Cedar Grove Maghull and various other Lennons in West Lancs who all appear to be relatives of a farm labourer called William Lennon and his wife Jane Lennon formerly McCabe who settled in Lydiate in the late 1870s. They were from Edenderry, Kings County (Offaly), Ireland according to the 1911 Census but were married on 7 Jan 1877 in neighbouring RC parish of Rhode, Kings County (Offaly). Oldest son John was born in Lydiate in 1878 he married local woman Margaret Fid(d)ler and their children were baptised C of E at St Andrew's Maghull. This Lennon family are not related to John Lennon of The Beatles.

I've been looking for another e-mail contact for Dr John Rowlands without success I think he is the John K Rowlands whose books are, "Lydiate & Maghull in time past" (1986) and "Around Maghull & Lydiate Through Time" (2010). There's various mentions of him online.
