by Christina
Birth Certificate: Nov.12,1879
John Joseph Burns (stroke through) and a (1) (What does this mean?) One Cr. I presume it means one correction to name but what I don't know. The spelling should be Byrne. No indication on the certificate what the correction was.
Mother - Ann Burns - Domestic Servant address 98 Gerard St.

Christening: John Joseph Burns Thompson November 24, 1879 St. Joseph's (RC)
Birth Nov.12,1879
Father Joseph Thompson
Mother Hanna Thompson Burns
Godmother Margarita Stockdale 78 Gerard Street

Marriage Banns: September 7, 14, 21 (3 times) Christ Church (C.E.)
Joseph Thompson (Bachelor) 98 Gerard Street
Ann Byrnes (spinster) 71 Hunter Street
No marriage certificate found

1881 Census: John Thomson age Liverpool (1)
Ann Burns married Liverpool (Fruit Seller)
Mary Burns widow Ireland
Ann Gleeson boarder Ireland

Jan. 9, 1882 :William Henry Duckworth Bachelor - Shipping Clerk -106 Anthony Street
Hannah Burns - Spinster -78 Priory Grove

Without any information on Joseph Thompson like age or profession I can not narrow him down. Any ideas would be helpful. For some reason the marriage didn't take place. I have researched death for a Joseph Thompson and I am still looking but realize there are many reasons for the marriage not taking place. His occupation would help was he a sailor etc.
The connection was indicating it was very strong for them to marry. I have tried to research to see if there is a 1879 Liverpool census so I could find him with the address.

Thanks Christina

It might be more helpful to us if we could see the certificate, if you are able to scan a portion of it to show us, the instructions are here https://www.liverpool-genealogy.org.uk/ ... 16&t=15790

When you say the spelling should be "Byrne" we usually feel that there is no correct way of spelling a surname especially if the person giving the information may be illiterate, it would be the enumerator/registrar to spell the surname the best way he feels.

Censuses are held every ten years ie 1841 and each ten available up to 1911, so sorry there wouldn't have been anything in 1879, however there may have been entries in street/trade directories.

Thanks for reply.

I will try and send copy of birth certificate. I did realize that Byrne can be spelled many ways and because some people could not spell their own name as well as interpreters of the name you get all kinds of spellings. I was hoping the crossing out of her surname meant there may have been a correction and she had another last name.

I made an error in put 1879 census I meant to put 1879 street directory which I have not been able to find.

Thanks Again Cristina

Not all streets were listed in directories so if it doesn't appear then it wasn't included.

You're doing fine Christina. There is a direct way to send a message to somebody and that is by using the little pm button on somebody's post, however it's better to reply on the board as in case there is any additional information it's there for all to see in case it helps with more suggestions.

There are links on the page below to various free Liverpool directories on Family Search. There is no search facility so you have to manually move from page to page. You can jump a number of pages by entering a different page number and clicking return. You can also minimise and maximise each page using + and - so you can view many small images on the screen at once and click on whatever page you want to view and maximise it to view its contents. Directories can be helpful but they are not inclusive like census records they only show a selection of names (heads of households) and addresses (most main roads and certain streets):-
