Thomas Woodburn born 1774 or 1776

Post by Yorkshire Woody »

Hello Everyone. I would class myself as reasonably competent in the family history department. I have Platinum subscription to Ancestry, but I have now come across a very difficult search. My 3rd Great-Grandfather.

Thomas Woodburn says he was born 1774 or on some occasions 1776 in Lancashire. He was a Cordwainer.
Married Elizabeth Luke (Look), 8th May 1806, St Anne's, Liverpool.
1807 living in Renshaw St., Liverpool.
1815 living in Cable St., Liverpool.
Death April 1846, West Derby.
Buried from Paradise St., Liverpool, to St John, Old Haymarket.

I can not find his baptism anywhere. The nearest is 1774 in Lancaster. It seems impossible he travelled this distance.

1. Was he telling porkies?
2. Are the parish registers incomplete?
3. Am I missing something?

Anybody got any ideas? I have been struggling with this for years. All help greatly appreciated.

Kindest regards From "Yorkshire Woody"

Hi and welcome,

the 1776 birth comes from the 1841 census, aged 65, if you're not aware, ages for adults over 15 were rounded down to the nearest 0/5. Thomas could have been 65-69, very likely born approx. 1774, given the burial details.

I see no reason why he couldn't have travelled to Liverpool, if he was indeed born in Lancaster.

If I've picked up on the correct possible baptism, father, William Woodburn, c1774, Lancaster.

Nothing conclusive, perhaps something to consider, there was a William Woodburn born c1747? Lancaster, I'll have to check the date again, Parents, Samuel, possibly married Agnes Thompson, 1745, Lancaster.

1841 census, Thomas had a son, Samuel,

Snippet in the Liverpool Mercury, 11 September, 1840,
Death of Agnes, youngest daughter of Thomas Woodburn, Paradise Street.

Children possibly named after Grandparents?

Hi guys,
Thanks Bert. A different set of eyes. Yes I had forgotten about rounding off ages. What a fool I am
I have scoured the Parish Registers 10 years either side of 1774, and there is only one reasonable entry, and it fits perfectly.

Thomas Baptised 11th Sept 1774, St Mary, Lancaster, father William.
Now this is where it gets interesting. Thomas had 3 sons and 2 daughters while in Liverpool.
Jane Woodburn 1807-1866
*William* Woodburn 1808-1880
Thomas Woodburn 1809-1860, from whom I am descended, and the only one to leave Lancashire.
Samuel Woodburn 1813-1865
Elizabeth Woodburn 1815-??????????????

I have nothing as yet on a Agnes Woodburn
Will have to look into that.

Many thanks to you all. Regards Woody

Hi and welcome to the forum, I too see no reason why he couldn't have travelled so far south, I have knowledge of migrations from Ulverston to Liverpool around a similar time, quite why I don't really know.

Good going Bert!!

Hi Bert,

Your post.

Death Liverpool Mercury, 5 Feb, 1847,

February 1, aged 65, Mrs Elizabeth Woodburn, widow of the late Thomas Woodburn, Paradise St.[/quote]

This does not make sense. Elizabeth (Luke) Woodburn b1771 d1839.
She died before the 1841 census and was out lived by Thomas who died in 1846.

There is something I am not picking up on.

Hi Bert,

The info is correct. I have been doing more digging.
Follow her birth back and you find her Baptism 17 Feb 1782. Daughter of William and Elizabeth Woodburn in Lancaster.

She is my Thomas Woodburn's sister, and all our hunches were right

1832, Eleanor's marriage. daughter of.
1840, Agnes's death, daughter of.
1847, Elizabeth's death, widow of.

Hi Bert,

This is getting confusing. Elizabeth Woodburn b1771 was buried 4th Aug 1839 St Martin in the Fields, Liverpool.
She does not appear on the 1841 Census. Thomas does in Cable Street along with Samuel, Elizabeth, and Thomas jnr, as the only residents.

Think I will have to double check everything.

Thanks Bert. Regards Woody

Woody,

I assumed Elizabeth would be at St John's along with Thomas, daughter Eleanor Peachey who died 1839 is also there.
