I have his birth and baptism, entry in the 1901 census, his FWW record, from FreeBMD his marriage in 1920. He had at least one child, and I know his date of death from a family bible - Jan.20, 1924. Family rumour has him as working for the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board as a diver. I quote from a correspondent:-
"John (Jack) Thorpe died of the bends. He worked for the Liverpool Merseyside Docks & Harbour Board. He was doing something in the water at the docks and he got the bends and died. They only had old equipment in those days and he had heavy boots. He was 42yrs."

I have tried to find either an obituary or a newspaper report of his death but without success. Suggestions please if you would be so kind.

Quick! Thank you Bert. I'll perhaps try in late July when I'm in England.

Tell us which newspapers you have been able to check.

I've really only been able here to use the findmypast site which has newspapers and also the British Newspaper Archive. I've put in keywords of various sorts plus his name but nothing useful has turned up so far. I shall just have to wait....

Katie always tells us that the way FMP indexes their newspapers for searching isn't terribly good, I believe the Liverpool Echo is on there, it would be better to drill down to the date of interest and check the page yourself rather than relying on the ocr search.
