Understanding Ireland Catholic Parish Register

Can anyone help me in understanding an entry from Ancestry - Ireland, Catholic Parish Registers.

• Does this show the birth of Mary Redmond ?
• If so I assume the parents are Patt (Redmond ?) and Ann Bogger ?
• Is Bogger her maiden name - or are they unmarried ?
• Who are Mick Redmond and El? Murphy ?
• Is El? Murphy .. Elizabeth Murphy ?

Any help would be appreciated.

FMP has an entry for this. Parents were Patt Boggan and Ann Boggan. Child was Mary Redmond. The other 2 mentioned are not in FMP, but will be the sponsors. The image doesn't make things very clear though, and like you I'm not sure why she is Mary Redmond. I'll check the 1851 census now.

There is nothing in any census I can find, but again, FMP have a marriage in Piercetown, Ferns, 25th May 1842 between Patrick Redmond and 'Caherine' Boggan. A couple of weeks after the birth.

Another Pat Redmond in Piercetown marrying a Catherine Boggan on 7th September 1825.

That's as near as I can find I'm afraid :? .

If this follows the style of English RC baptisms, it usually means that the parents name will be Redmond and the mother's maiden name will be Boggan.

I agree with Johnnyo that Mick Redmond and Elen Murphy will be the godparents.

Apart from Ancestry & FMP you can also view these records on the NLI website. There's no search provided but you don't have to sign in to view and download the images:-

Blue,

Many thanks - I have not seen the nli.ie Register website before - it looks fascinating - I will take a further look.

Mary A/JohnnyO - many thanks for the info - looks like some more leads to follow up.

JohhnyO - is the marriage you refer to 1842 or 1843. I think the Mary Redmond birth was 20 April 1843

Hi Denis, the transcription is definitely for 25th May 1842. There is also another entry on FMP for Patrick Redmond marrying Margaret Beggin on 3rd May 1835 at Enniscorthy in Fearns. here is a link to the 1842 entry http://registers.nli.ie//registers/vtls ... 1/mode/1up
