Baptism conundrum

I am having difficulty understand why an infant would have two baptisms - details below; I'm sure someone will put me right!!!!

1. 29 November 1864 - St.Chrystostom, Everton. Margaret Ann Barton born 2nd November 1864, Breckfield Road North - pa licensed victualler.

1. 18th June 1865 - St.Peter's, Liverpool, Margaret Ann Barton born 2nd November 1864, Everton - pa licensed victualler.

Her parents Edmund and Mary Rebecca Barton had two other children, only found one baptism each.

Edmund and Mary Rebecca married 25th August 1862, St.Peter's - Rebecca Chaddock............however on census she is down as Mary Rebecca, as on baptisms. On "Find a Grave"she is down as Mary Rebecca Barton. Any reason for only Rebecca on her marriage certificate ???

We can only conjecture. Perhaps the second baptism was to bind in a new godfather (or godmother).

Strange! perhaps a parent objected so the first was done secretly, but could they have come around later and rather than owning up went through it all again?

It seems that this phenomenon reached Liverpool in the early to mid 1860's - around your time of interest. It could well be that the parents had some religious experience and felt moved to re-commit themselves. This guy was a prime player in Liverpool at that time:

He was a sort of early expert in social media - the Liverpool newspapers of the time carried lots of stories about him, and letters from him debating anyone seen as less than solid, especially the CoI hierarchy.

I always think when I see 2 baptisms, the first was carried out because a child was in poor health and wasn't expected to survive, the second more of a celebration, not rushed with the inclusion of family and friends.

I am now wondering if the first baptism was "a quiet one", as ma and pa had only married a couple of months earlier ; second baptism, thinking folk wouldn't remember when they got married!! Not sure about this, sounds ludicrous
Bert, Yes I have Edmund's marriage to Mary Laffin, widow of Hugh Laffin, 1832-1871, both from Ireland.
Edmund died 1876, Mary Rebecca 1873.
Guess we'll never know for sure re the two baptisms.
These folk are not my lot, I am tracing the ancestry of a friend.
