Catherine Hughes's death - 1850s, 1860s or 1870s?

Post by Gwebb1 »

Bit of a cheeky request this as I am reluctant to renew my Ancestry subscription until I come back from holiday but can't find what I want on Findmypast and it's driving me mad!

Catharine Hughes was born in Flint, Wales, 1790; I have her on the 1841 census living with her husband and married son (both William Hughes) and I have her on the 1851 census, by which time she is widowed and living in Watkinson Street with her older sister, Mary Evans.
I may have found her on the 1861 census living with another sister, Sarah Jones, in Every Street.

However, I have found several possible deaths and without access to Ancestry, I am struggling to identify which one refers to Catharine, widow of William Hughes. I have noticed a possible burial in September 1852, possible death February 1860 and possible death April 1871 - there could be others!

Can anyone put me out of my misery?

In this instance the age at death isn't on the usual death indexes - ie freebmd, Ancestry, Findmypast etc. however the early indexes on the GRO site now have the age, so giving a great deal of help to decide if the entry is the right one.

You need to register with the site if you haven't already, but that's free.

Thanks for the quick response, Mary.

I've not registered with GRO but I will get on to that now.

However, before posting on the forum, I'd played around with Ancestry and narrowed it down to a few possible deaths linked to Catharine's birth date so I'm not sure if the GRO exploration will get me any further.

Problem is, I know I have the correct Catharine on the 1851 census but if it is the same person on the 1861 census, it means she had a step-sister called Sarah. I've gone down that route too and it is feasible but just need to confirm I am still in the right family!

As always, many thanks.

That is all from Lancashire burials in Liverpool.
There is one buried Walton that might fit. Aged 78 from workhouse 1871 22 April, this was from C of E burials
Catholic St Anthony. 1852 aged 58 years Mansfield St.
1862 June no age given of Cagoe St ? St Oswald Catholic.

Thanks, Lynne.
It has ruled out the 58 year old Catharine buried in 1852 whom I had been considering as I have no reason to believe she was Catholic.

Annoyingly, I have a hint for Catharine Hughes on my Ancestry tree (can't access it because I was hoping to wait until after coming back from holiday before renewing my subscription!) citing England Select Deaths and Burials 1538-1991 and naming her spouse as William and her child as William. I was thinking - perhaps naively - that this would be a record showing she was the widow of William Hughes and that her death had been reported by her son, William Hughes.
It is this hint that made me think I could sort this puzzle out quickly!

Wow you are so clever. There is one
Catherine Hughes Female
Married
age 30
b 1824 !!!
died 1854
Liverpool spouse William. I know the age is wrong, but it might be a mis-transcribe.
FHL film number 1595424

There is another who died in Garston.
24 Feb 1860 age 76 (1784) death dates can be out because people did not know how old they were.
FHL Film Number: 396370

There were 39 hits
4 in Liverpool which we have discounted and the one at Walton.
the 2 above and the rest in other parts of England. (I had said she died Liverpool.)
Good luck Lynne

Still struggling with this one - I think I have discounted the 'sister' on the 1861 census as I cannot make any link re: births, even taking into account they might be step-siblings.
Also, I think I have found the 1861 Catherine on the 1871 census and ths says she was from Caenarvon, not Flintshire where my Catherine was born.

I did notice a possible death in 1871 but having looked it up on Ancestry courtesy of their free off (thanks for the tip, Mary - it came just at the right time!) it seems she died in the workhouse.

If I send for the death certificate, will it give me any further details, apart from possibly cause of death, or is it likely to just tell me she was living in the workhouse and her death had been reported by an official there?

Thanks for the help you folks have given me on this - much appreciate you taking the time to look things up on the behalf of others.

Regards,
Glen

I believe that if a family member or friend had registered the death they would have put her/their address where living, so to have the address as the Workhouse, I believe the Master would have made the registration. I think even the Workhouse Register would only tell you the date she "left" and Died would be in the column.

It's possible you might find out a little from the Admittance Register to the Workhouse but it may be only that she was admitted because of illness so possibly only a few weeks.

Sorry not to sound more certain about things, but obviously it depends on the person themselves.

Thanks, Mary - I'm not even sure if I am looking at the correct Catharine!

I have a 'hint' on Ancestry for a possible death in the record set 'England Select Deaths and Burials 1538-1991' and the Bishop's Transcripts but frustratingly there is no image so the reference does not even give me a date to explore.
Anywhere else I can go with following this lead up?

Just about to submit a new topic re: death of Catharine's husband!

Glen.

The only entry I can find in that database for a Catharine Hughes, born about 1790 +/- a few years is this one, which is obviously not yours.

Age: 19
Birth Date: 1789
Death Date: 12 Nov 1808

I'm beginning to wonder if she did die in Liverpool or if she had returned to Tranmere where she had married William Hughes in 1810.
The post I've just submitted re: William's death, suggest he had returned to Tranmere in August 1850 (the family having all been on the 1841 census in Liverpool) where he apparently died. Nor can I find anything concerning Catherine's unmarried sister, Mary Evans, apart from them both being in Watkinson Street and on poor relief in 1851.
I think I will have to widen my search!
