Liverpool & South West Lancashire FHS - Forum

Hi everyone,
I have been researching the Stackhouses in Liverpool and although I can tracked them in the 1881, 1901 and 1911 census I cannot find any of the family in the 1891 census. Family is John and Alice Jane and their children. John born 1844/46 depending on which census you look at and Alice Jane born 1858. Children are Edward Wallace, Ann Jane, Isabella, William, Bessie and Esther. In 1881 and 1901 they are showing in Scotland Place liverpool and in 1911 Alice is showing as a widow and has then moved to Rice Lane. I cannot find any of them anywhere in 1891? Does anyone have any ideas? I have checked workhouses etc

The family lived in Scotland Place in 1881, 1901, and the given address at Esther's baptism, 1892, was Scotland Place, so its unlikely they moved away and moved back. In 1891 the numbers recorded for Scotland Place that I could find were 5 to 19 and 22 to 34. Its possible the enumerator has missed completely the other dwellings and they were never recorded. It's known it did happen in 1891.

Census for England, Wales and Scotland: missing pieces

Thanks Bert, that will explain why I couldnt find any of the family anywhere in that year. Would have been interesting to see the census as John was previuosly down as a labourer and then a bird dealer and then in 1901 is suddenly a tallow chandler and classed as employer.
