Thanks for trying everyone. Found his full DoB on his merchant navy ticket 27 Dec 1844 and thought it might help, obviously not! Anyone know what to do next with regards to finding this?

Do try the new GRO search www.gro.gov.uk make sure you are registered and logged in and hopefully you should be able to find him and it will give his mother's maiden name. If you are quick you can also click the "pdf" button to the side and order the .pdf certificate at £6.00 before they run out.

If you don't find him in the index, or are not sure between a couple of them, then you can order direct from the GRO at the above address and UNCHECK whether the GRO reference is known, then you can put in the exact date and if not found they will refund your money. Could be easier to telephone them on 0300 123 1837
