I am trying to pin down a house named Elm Lodge, Ullet Road in the 1871 census. Other houses nearby are Douro Lodge, Park View and The Lawn.
I suspect it could now be part of Bellrive School, but enquiries there have not drawn a reply.
Any clues would be welcome.

Elm Lodge sounds like one of those common names for houses so not sure if I have it right on this map. This one is not on Ullet Road but is nearby as is Douro Lodge:-

Many thanks, Blue and Bert for your help. I agree that the name of the house is a common one, and it seems to have varied. I have just found it as Elm Cottage in the right location, but earlier than the period I want, in the first OS 6 inch map, 1850 - before Sefton Park was created. It is also on the OS 1905 as Elmfield. They are possibly all the same building.
Douro Lodge was where I expected it to be from the census, so I am now on the right track.

I think that's probably the one. What was the occupant's name in 1871?

Looking at the 1840s map (see link below) "Elmfield" was then "Elm Cottage" and where "Retreat" and "Elm Lodge" are in Linnet Lane there's one property called "Finchett House":-

September 1841, Murray Gladstone died, Elm Lodge, Toxteth Park,

1841 census the enumerator has recorded him living at what looks like (H)elm Lodge, Ullet Lane, next to be recorded was Finchett House.

In 1802 he had married Susanna Finchett.

There are various newspaper references to "Elm Lodge, Ullet Road" and "Elm Lodge, Lark Lane". Linnet Lane runs between Ullet Road and Lark Lane so I am thinking that all these references are probably to the same house, at 4 Linnet Lane.

My interest is in James Baines, shipbroker, who was there in 1871 with his family. It was recorded as 8 Ullet Road, but numbering must have changed at least once over the years. They were not there in 1881.

a house named Elm Lodge, Ullet Road in the 1871 census
Confused ... the 1871 census (as you now say) names the residence of James Baines as 8 Ullet Road. No mention of Elm Lodge. Have you considered that he may have moved from one to the other?

I assume this is the James Baines that owned the Black Ball Line?

Is it likely he moved between 1870 and 1871 and stayed in the same road?

There's a burial of Mary Bain from Elm Lodge, Lark Lane in 1867 - any relation? The death announcement says it was the residence of her son-in-law.

Just noting an 1866 marriage from Elm Lodge, Ullet Road at which Mary Esther Baines was a witness:

3 Jul 1866 St Michael in the Hamlet, Aigburth, Lancs.
Alexander Dickson - 31 Cotton Salesman Bachelor of Upper Canning St, Liverpool
Elizabeth Lewis - 30 Spinster of Elm Lodge, Ullet Road, Toxteth Park
Groom's Father: William Dickson, Gentleman
Bride's Father: Caleb Lloyd Lewis, Banker
Witness: James Davies; Mary Esther Baines

I was just reading the brief Wikipedia article on James Baines and also a public tree on Ancestry.
Both have him marrying Anne Netherton in 1848. The public tree gives the date as 2 May 1848.

There was a marriage that day at Altcar of James Baines, ship broker, but it was to an Anne Brown.

There was an announcement in Gore's Liverpool General Advertiser of 11 May 1848:

"On Tuesday, the 2nd inst at Altcar, Mr. James Baines, of this town, to Anne, eldest daughter of the late John Browne, Esq. of Netherton."

Mary Bain who was buried from Elm Lodge, Lark Lane was the mother-in-law of Thomas Vicars, an engineer. He's listed in 1867 Gore's at that address, while James Baines is listed at Elm Lodge, Ullet Road. So they were different locations.

I thought I had posted a reply about 1 pm, dealing with a few points, but it has not appeared, so I shall have to rewrite it and send again.
Back later, but continued thanks for interest and detection.

In 1873 Gore's, James Baines was listed at 244 Upper Parliament Street. A Henry Nash was at 8 Ullet Road.

In 1874 Gore's, Douro Lodge is apparently mentioned for the first time, at 28 Ullet Road. http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/fac/arts/mode ... es/villas/

The 1881 directory places 8 Ullet Rd between the Church and Alexandra drive.
