Westhead, Lathom, Lancashire

Post by plimmerian »

my friend ordered his grandparents birth certificates hoping it would reveal where they had been born but all it stated on both certificates was "Westhead, Lathom" - the irony is by 1911 both were living at Ormskirk addresses and not in Westhead:

Ada Stait b. 28 Feb 1906 by 1911 at Court Off Church St (21), Ormskirk (not sure what the 21 in brackets refers to in the signature box of the householder)

John William Pye b. 07 May 1902 by 1911 at 9 Green Lane Avenue, Ormskirk

aside:
they were married 06 Jul 1929 at the Parish Church, Ormskirk - both living at 12 Court, Burscough Street, Ormskirk

when John died in 1938 at 74 Wigan Road, Ormskirk, his usual address was listed as 36 Ravenscroft, Ormskirk
he is buried, I believe, in the Parish Church but there is no headstone

Ada was cremated in 1997 at Southport Crem.

Ormskirk is very close to Westhead, to walk it would take only about a quarter of an hour. The change of address may have been for reasons of work, perhaps there was more in the town, Westhead is only a small village even now and may have been even less populated then.

74 Wigan Road Ormskirk was the address of the Ormskirk Workhouse later Ormskirk Hospital.

You don't give the parents' names but I'm guessing that Ada's parents were Joshua and Annie Stait, nee Pye ?

In 1901, they were living at Brickfields in Westhead per the census.

There's a lot on the Pye/Stait family on Pye-family-history blogspot you'll have to google it as I can't copy the exact title.

The address in Westhead was Brickfields in 1901 and in 1891 was Brickcroft.

There were and are many small courts in Ormskirk I suspect the 21 refers to the house number at the entry to the court. It's possibly now Plough Court Yard.

I agree that the (21) refers to the house number near to the court entrance. There was a court between 19 & 21 Church Street. The court is number 3 court in Church Street Ormskirk it was more or less across the street from The Three Crowns Hotel.
