Richard Jones/May Worthington help please

Hello

I hope someone is able to point me in the correction direction for tracing a branch of my family. I am looking for a May Worthington who was born around 1919 to 1921 in Liverpool and married a Richard Jones in 1936 to 1938.

May's parents were John and Louisa Worthington but I don't know anything about Richard Jones except he was in the army, possibly in the Welsh Guards.

Any help would be wonderful.

Thank you
Benji

Thanks very much Karen and alex69

How do I get a copy of the marriage certificate without more details?

Sorry I'm a bit useless, have recently joined Ancestry and am planning on joining this society but I feel like I'm fumbling in the dark at the moment!

Thanks again
Benji

Benji,

How do you know what you have so far?

Do you know what Louisa Worthington's maiden name was?

Hi and welcome to the forum.

We have a few items you might find useful to browse, one is https://www.liverpool-genealogy.org.uk/ ... =25&t=6937 which will explain the difference between the certificates you may be able to gain from the Record Office and those you need to order, and another on our main site https://www.liverpool-genealogy.org.uk/ where there is a link to a "Getting Started" guide you can download, produced by a member of our Society.

The only birth I have found that fits the information you have given is
Births Jun 1921 Worthington May M Mother's Maiden Name - Cleator Toxteth P. 8b 399

Unfortunately I haven't found a marriage between a Worthington and a Cleator, perhaps you might know if she had any siblings to help identify them.

Mary,

My reason for asking,

Births Jun 1920

Worthington Louisa M, Gray, W.Derby 8b 1379

There was a marriage, John Worthington/Louisa Gray, perhaps May dropped her name Louisa.

Thank you so much everyone for your help so far.

Louisa Worthington's maiden name was Gray, not Cleator.

I know what I have so far from memory and from another member of the family's family tree but he has concentrated on going backwards in time, I am trying to concentrate on getting everything sorted out at parent and grandparent's levels. It's quite a complex family!

It's very possible that May was originally Louisa May and that date of birth would fit with other family member's dates of birth with next eldest born in 1922.

Thank you again, this group is wonderful and I am definitely going to join the society.

Benji x

Interestingly Richard and Louisa JONES are living next door to SAMUEL & ELLEN E JONES respective dates of birth 1 March 1877 and 21 June 1872.

Thank you so much alex69, this information on Richard Jones may be exactly what I need to find out more about him.

I suspect May's mother would not give permission for the wedding hence the changed DOB.

Thanks again

I visited Liverpool records office today and have seen the marriage certificate from Richard and Louisa May's wedding. The neighbours don't seem to be related , must just be a same common name coincidence. Came home very excited, knowing Richard's father's name was Hugh and he was deceased at the time of the marriage but immediately hit another brick wall as I can't find a father/son relationship between a Hugh and a Richard Jones. I have so much information now and thought it would be easy but it seems to still want to be a challenge!

Hi Bert

Thanks very much for your help

The father's occupation seems to be coal porter. The witnesses are Thomas Blunton and J Worthington (? May's father). The address is 22 Ashgrove for both bride and groom. I suspect the groom may have been a lodger with the family.

I know Richard Jones had another son, again Richard, from a previous marriage and I can't find him either.

With the father's occupation that definitely looks like it may be the same Richard Jones.

Thanks again
Benji

Martha Alice Jones or Torres, also seems to have been known as Martha Alice Stock and this has opened up another pathway and hopefully some more information.

I now have all Richard Jones's siblings and the names of the 3 children by his marriage to May Worthington and even have an old army photo of Richard and a photo of his daughter Lilian!

Thanks again Bert

Good finds Bert, makes me wonder if our ancestors really didn't know their year of birth or whether they deliberately changed it, perhaps for pension reasons by that time?

Well, Mary,

According to some family historians, we had enumerators and recorders of official documentation who couldn't read or write, were obviously deaf and couldn't understand the accent of people they lived amongst

Probably didn't help, form filling on someone's behalf.

I'd go along with all of that as I've come across it ;) but in this case wasn't the dob given in 1939 by the person themselves yet we have the proof of baptism it being a year out.
