George Fallowfield [1814-1869]

John Fallowfield [1849-1913] was born in Penrith, Cumberland. A transcript of his birth certificate states "Born Nineteenth August 1849, Townhead, Penrith. Father: George Fallowfield, joiner. Mother: Frances Fallowfield, formerly Bailey".

The marriage of George Fallowfield [1814-1869] & Frances Bailey [1820-1860] has been traced to St Peter's, Liverpool on 21 August 1836. I am intrigued as to why George and Frances [who were both born in Penrith], travelled to Liverpool to get married, but were back in Penrith by 1849. [No trace in the 1841 Census]. One possible explanation is that Frances was only 16 at the time. However, I am unable to find an online record of the 1836 marriage, which would hopefully reveal the father's names of both George & Frances. Other trees have George's parents as William Fallowfield [b1759] and Ruth Ewbank, but I think they are more likely to be grandparents.

I was hoping that someone on this forum would be able to advise whether microfiche records are held for marriages at St Peter's, and if so, where they are kept. I will then be able to plan a trip from Tyneside to Liverpool with confidence that I will demolish this particular brick wall!

Thank you in advance for any assistance :D

Dave

Hi Dave and welcome,

The marriage was pre 1837 registration, you will not get a marriage certificate in the format that includes the fathers names. You probably have what's on Anc for the marriage.

Have you this?

Hi and welcome to the forum. Bert is our regular night owl and seems to have found a lot of answers before we've even woken up, well done Bert!

Just to confirm what he says, that Civil Registration only began in 1837 so any marriages prior to that have just the minimum of information on the certificate.

They may indeed have come to Liverpool for secrecy reasons, Frances being young, however it wasn't until 1929 that the legal age for marriage raised to 16 for both sexes, from 14 men, 12 women, parental consent still required up to age 21.

So it could be that consent by her parents might not have been forthcoming rather than her youth.

They may have thought to emigrate but after arriving here and trying to amass some money to take with them, perhaps the arrival of children changed their plans?

Or he may have thought that there was more work available for him in Liverpool.

Well done, Bert - a wealth of info within hours! :D

I hadn't come across Lowther before. He obviously became a joiner like his father & returned to Liverpool to marry.

I was hoping to find a microfiche copy of the original parish register - on Tyneside & Wearside these often included the father's name, and also details of the witnesses - invaluable clues to family history addicts like me!

I have searched Ancestry unsuccessfully for the 1851 Census - the family must have been in the Penrith area by then. The 1861 Census just shows George & John - Frances senior died in 1860, and Frances junior is probably elsewhere as a servant. George is known to have remarried in 1868, but died the following March [The coroner decided he died from 'exhaustion and exposure to the inclemency of the weather']

Thanks & kind regards
Dave
