Good Evening,

I have an ancestor Mary Elizabeth James born 21/11/1851, father John James -Master Mariner, Mother Joanna James .Mary was born in Liverpool. In 1881 she had a son John Wiliam James in Blackburn, still living with family, though no father is registered for the son. Two years earlier also had another son Percy Wharton, and the mother is Mary E James, same address in Blackburn , again no father.

Now on the 1891 census she is in Cheshire with the mother, Joanna, who is now a widow, and Mary is also a widow now calling herself Mary E Wharton, and the son John is a Wharton.

Later on in 1895 she marrys a Charles Hunt, no children are with her in the following census, the couple are married and living on the Isle of Man!!

Now i can't find where this Mr Wharton is, or comes from, or where the children go, are there any childrens homes, banardos etc, they could of gone, and I can't find a death for Mary.

Help appreciated!

Hi and welcome to the forum. We will certainly help you with the search, but when it comes to workhouse/orphanage entries for the Blackburn area you may wish to contact a Lancashire Society that covers a little further north, this would be a likely one http://www.lfhhs.org/

I know that Blackburn library/Record Office holds many resources for the area, it might be worthwhile giving them a call to ask their advice.

A child's death recorded, Percy James

Deaths, Dec 1881

Percy James, 2, W. Derby 8b 316

I can't find a child born in the area, 1879, may suggest the family moved back to the area around that time.
