William Henry Softley

Hello everyone,
I know that W H S was living in the Travellers Rest in Maghull in 1901 with his second wife, Jane. But I cannot find a marriage for them, it must have been in the previous 10 years. He was born in 1857, and Jane in 1850. Can anyone suggest places to look? I'd really appreciate any help, I'm new to this :D

There is a public 'tree' on Anc that just may be of interest to you

http://person.ancestry.co.uk/tree/11358 ... 6859/facts

If you dont have an account with Ancxxxx, and you are fortunate enough to have a local public library that's still open, you can gain access to it from there with staff help.
copy & use the above link in full.

Yes his first wife was Ellen who died at 31, I haven't discovered what of yet, but he was left with four youngsters to look after. I hope Jane Hollis is the right one, she looks spot on so I've ordered a marriage certificate.
Thanks again for your help.

Sadly there is no trace of the travellers rest having ever existed but there are still some images that remain.
Here's one for posterity, might even be your man & family appearing in front of it ?

Hi, welcome to the forum.

As you say that you are new to all this I hope you won't mind me making a suggestion.

You weren't positive that the marriage of William to Jane Hollis was correct - although like Blue I would agree that it certainly seems like a match, especially with an unusual name such as he has, if you specify when ordering some criteria that you are positive about, eg that he was a Widower and perhaps what his father's name was, then if you ordered the incorrect one they would refund your money.

Apparently there has been a lot of work done on this tree by a member of Ancestry, see the link given by Vic above, it would be well worth your while taking a look to see if you can get any clues and proceed by verifying the details for yourself, as we obviously prefer the evidence of our own research.

Good luck

Thanks Vic for the photo, I have seen that one (I believe he was dead by the time that was taken though) and another photo which I fortunately copied but have been unable to find since! Also for the ancestry link, which will have to wait until I get to the library.

Possibly this pic then ?

Youre welcome Michael, but what makes you think that the first image is post WHS demise ?
I believe that photo to have been taken around 1905 and without wishing to appear a 'geek' :D The telegraph pole visible above & behind the house is of a design that was in use from 1880 according to the
http://www.telegraphpoleappreciationsoc ... raph-poles
Yep! You just couldnt make it up
Actually,I lived in Maghull for 32 years and know the town and its history quite well, the photo is probably taken a good few years before WW1. And, as WHS's Father died only in 1903, I would assume that WHS himself survived until WW1 [1914] at least

[add] Corrected info = It would appear that WillHenry's Father,William, died during Q2 1903 at the declared age of 66 (GRO Ref D_1903_April_Liverpool 8B82) Image
and William Henry only survived another year as it looks like he died in Q4 1904 at the declared age of 49y.(GRO Ref D_1904_Oct_Liverpool 8b38).

To help you a little more I have taken a snapshot of the tree and you can hopefully capture it from here and expand it?

Vic Mar, where do you find these sites. It is so lovely. :D

Yes, Vic, thats the other picture but I found the photo that the painting was from, and I thought WHS died in 1904 but again, I can't remember where I saw that. It's all back of envelope stuff at the moment - I will get organised soon; maybe!
One other thing, the photo doesn't show the gable end of the pub with the sign which I can't quite read. Actually, now I compare them, the photo is very slightly shifted - taken about 3 feet to the right - http://s31.photobucket.com/user/Michael ... t.jpg.html

Do you notice the flag pole, there is a flag flying on the other photo, near the telegraph pole. Also there is a census return for Dennis Clark the publican - perhaps 1911?

Today is the tomorrow that you promised to "get it sorted" yesterday ! :)
"Back of a fag packet" does not work in this line of research believe me.
There are plenty of on line genealogy "fill in the boxes" diags which at least will get you started. If you find the tree I posted of interest to you it would appear that the owners are still active and welcome any contact with possible relatives so you just might be one of the lucky ones that so many people on this forum wish would happen for them.
Good Luck Vic

I use a very strange search engine site and stay well away from the likes of google, it works for me. I happened to know of the maghull site from being a 'local' once.

Yes I spotted it and it is a Union 'Jack' in full fettle, the sign above the door reads
"Travellers Rest" Then on larger board it says "DENNIS CLARK, Licensed to sell ALE,PORT[?]& CIDER, Tobacco & Spirits"
The gable end sign on the second 'painting says "Travellers Rest - Licensed to sell - ALES,CIDER & TOBACCO" cant make out the bottom line but likely to be Denis Clark I would guess !

No probs Michael, but just one more thing for you,and all you will need is a printer.
http://obituarieshelp.org/free_printabl ... _tree.html
Make your choice of chart and then make that start on getting organised ! :)
My choice for you initially would be the 8th one down (5 Gens)

Dont forget the advice of MaryA and double check all that you find before accepting it, we have all made the wrong turn at some stage.
