I would like to thank all who have helped in my search. Thanks to your guidance. I now feel the information I have on my tree is no longer so iffy. My previous records seemed to alternate between Irish and Scottish.
I now believe him to be Irish and thanks to your good-selves I am happy with previous findings which I doubted.
To clarify:-
I feel he had a wife called Mary C 1811-1841, 2 children John McGill 1822 and Mary McGill 1824-1864.
Probably a 1st wife also Mary 1788-1819, with children Margaret McGill 1812, Robert 1814-1815, John 1816-1816, Ann 1817, John 1818-1820.

His father is possibly also Roger McGill C 1755 where? Died KILLEAN AND KILCHENZIE,ARGYLL,SCOTLAND.
Mother possibly Mary Mackay. Sibling David 1786 and John.

It feels this would explain the juxtaposition of Ireland /Scotland as his father could have gone from Ireland earlier on. I am at this point still unable to establish the father's profession and would love to find apprentice records for my Roger but I will probably have to join an Irish FHS site (where and which one is to be thought about). It would also have to have a great forum such as this one is.

The search goes on.

Veegeeh.

Pre-registration (before 1864) Irish research is difficult because there are few records available to identify the whereabouts of ancestors. I'm in the same boat as you with a Kelly whose first appearance on record is in Liverpool in 1807. I have no idea of his county of origin and I can't be sure considering the few records available whether he does appear on the few records available. The second marriage is a bit of a mystery I'm surprised that hasn't been found. My guess going by Roger's occupation is that he came from one of the Irish cities.

Hi Blue

I like your thinking about him coming from one of the cities. Thanks

I don't suppose there's any chance of you visiting Who Do You Think You Are event? Birmingham 7-9 April, perhaps a bit too far away, but there will be a few Irish FH Societies present who may be able to advise you further or one might take your fancy to join their forum.

Hi Mary

No such luck I'm afraid, but thanks for your thought.
