Crichton Alexander Walter 1818-1900

Post by Veegeeh »

I am a new member to this Society but am a member of many other societies and have been researching my family for some 15+ years. However he has proved a little difficult. My research into other lines has taken me back to 1452 and proven as I tend to go to record offices for research to allay doubts. However, Liverpool is a bit far for me so I seek guidance. I believe I can trace his family back around 1730 in Scotland , but Scottish records are difficult.

This is my 2nd Gt Grandfather. He married 23 Aug 1852 a Mary McGill 1824-1864 at St Johns Preston in Lancashire.
I believe they had 3 children Mary Jane Crichton 1853-1903, (I follow down her line), John Sweeney Crichton 1855-1819, Isabella Betsy Crichton 1857 - ?

He is a Millwright and Engineer on various records.

I have him in 1853 • 69 Park St, Hulme, Manchester, Lancashire. He married again in London and I have various records for proof BUT I am researching his family and am having some difficulty although I believe the records to be correct - he is Scottish by birth and his father is the same profession. On the 19 June 1874 he takes out a patent for the improvement of Breech Loading Fire Arms in the London Gazette.

It seems that the surname can be spelt other ways also.

I would be interested if anyone has any more information about him please.
I will be posting other messages about the McGill side of the family separately.

Thank you

Veegeeh

Can you tell us where Liverpool comes into it, his marriage in Preston in 1852 and then the children born where? as he is in Hulme in 1853 more or less when Mary Jane was born, the births of John Sweeney and Isabella are also noted as Manchester in the indexes.

Good question Mary.
My assumption was that 30-40 mile radius would be surrounding areas, especially for working Mills.
This of course could be wrong and I bow to your knowledge. Do you feel that another FHS group would be more likely please?

This is a great learning curve thanks for your thoughts.

Good find Bert, you have the link to Liverpool and surrounds, what a pity the marriage in 1876 isn't on http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/ however, http://lancashirebmd.org.uk/ lists it as "St Helens Parish" with the Registers held at St Helens. It might be worthwhile getting in touch with St Helens Library and asking them if they would do you a look up, tell them it's Q3 and the ref for the parish register is C6/4/496 the number 496 will help them find the entry without the date.

Unfortunately there is a great divide between Liverpool and Manchester, luckily Isabella seems to have married firstly in the middle and then come to Liverpool, but for at least the years covering the baptisms of the children you would need to check the Manchester area.

Nice Bert!

On the other thread https://www.liverpool-genealogy.org.uk/ ... 89#p120483 the witnesses to the marriage of Alexander Crichton and Mary McGill were Thomas and Christiana Woodhouse, I wonder if this is an error, could they be related to this witness?

Woodhouse and Woodstock, don't know Mary, common enough names.
