Thomas Andrew Maynard b 1881
Thomas Andrew Maynard b 1881
I have been researching my family tree for some time and have come across a brick wall surrounding my paternal grandfather Thomas Andrew Maynard. He was born in Liverpool in 1881 and married Margaret George Brodie in 1904, however he disappeared sometime either just before or during WW1. I understand he may have changed his name to Nolan and was known by Andy not Thomas. I have searched the forces networks and there is not record of him there either. Can anyone suggest how I might go about tracing him?
Re: Missing grandfather
Hi and welcome to the forum.
Have you considered whether he may have changed his name legally? There may have been a notice in the local newspaper.
Have you checked the 1939 census for either name, using his exact date of birth?
Were they still in Liverpool in the 1911 census and have any children? also have you checked for any post 1911 when the mother's maiden name is given in the indexes?

Re: Missing grandfather
Assuming you know that the other members of the family remained in Liverpool and whether they have any clues as to what happened to him. It could be that he didn't want to be found ie possibly jumped ship in the Antipodes or returned home to a different address.novac2016 wrote:he disappeared sometime either just before or during WW1............Can anyone suggest how I might go about tracing him?

Re: Missing grandfather
There is no Thomas Andrew Maynard birth in Liverpool - only a Thomas Maynard. Same with baptism. He married in 1904 as Thomas Andrew
1904 marriage has his father as Richard which ties in with this baptism
Thomas Maynard born 24.1.1881 baptised 5.3.1881
Liverpool, St Stephen the Martyr
Father Richard Maynard occ cork cutter address 15 Clyde Terrace
Mother Jane Maynard
1881 entry here and suspect Thomas's age should be 2mths not 2yrs

Richard Dentith Maynard married Jane Cannell in 1859 so no Nolan link to his mothers maiden name
