William Massey's discharge papers from the 9th Battalion Artillery from 1816 state that he enlisted in 1805 age 22 and was born in Appleton, Cheshire.
When he was discharged, he moved to Upper Canada and was granted 100 acres in Drummond Township, Lanark County, Upper Canada. He later moved to Ameliasburgh Township, Prince Edward County, Upper Canada. He died 02 Sep 1863 in his 81st year. A new replacement for his gravestone states that he fought in the Battle of Waterloo.
William married Ann [maiden name unknown] and appears to have two sons and one daughter at the time of his discharge in 1816. I suspect that he was married and had children in England.
I am trying to discover who William's parents were. I understand that Appleton lies within the parish of Great Budworth. Looking at the baptismal records for Great Budworth on FamilySearch.org, I did not find a good match for a baptism for William Massey born about 1783 in Appleton.
I looked at the map and realized that Appleton is approx. 6 miles away from the St. Mary & All Saints Church [Great Budworth] but only approx. 3 miles from the St. Elphin Church in Warrington.
Using the Lancashire OnLine Parish Clerks website, I found the following baptismal entry:
Baptism: 13 Apr 1783 St Elphin, Warrington, Lancashire, England
William Massey - Son of Thos Massey & Nancy
Occupation: Husbn
Register: Baptisms 1781 - 1812, Page 24, Entry 700
Source: LDS Film 1562957
However, I am not sure that I have the right baptism nor can I find any further entries for Thomas & Nancy Massey in either the baptismal or marriage registers.
I have requested a microfilm loan of the baptismal register for the above transcription hoping that it might mention where the couple was living at the time of the baptism.
Does anyone have any suggestions how to proceed?
Can anyone recommend a professional research who specializes in Warrington / Appleton?
Thank you for your kind assistance.
Regards,
David
