1861 Census Liverpool Hospital Records

Post by alanwalker14 »

Anyone know how to locate the census record for someone who was in hospital? Looking for a Ellen (Eleanor) Walker b 1821 in Carnarvon in the 1861 census. Her home address was probably 6 Edmund St Liverpool at the time.

I'm not sure about the census but you will get some interesting information on hospitals from our local expert Mike Royden

The experts will expand, but generally... there were no hospitals as we know, just an 'Infirmary' linked to the Workhouse and all Workhouse residents were identified by initials.

Try:
First Name: E
Last Name: W
and you should retrieve a large list to be whittled down from other information.

On Ancestry you can find institutional census records manually if you can identify the part of Liverpool the institution was located in for example Liverpool's Royal Infirmary is in Lancashire/Liverpool/Mount Pleasant/District Royal Infirmary... here is a direct link to these pages on Ancestry:-

That's very interesting Blue, so have the names not been transcribed and indexed for just 1861 or are they a "manual scroll" through the pages for each census year? It could help to locate some of our missing ones......

In that link I gave for Mike Royden's article he gives many street addresses but I can't find out on Ancestry how you find a particular street or do you have to know the district and start at the enumerators book and work through the pages manually until you get a hit?

All those names will have been transcribed, so as long as they have been transcribed accurately, they should appear in search results.

The street indexes used to be available to check the Folio and Page Numbers on the National Archives site, and I used to have a link to them, however, the NA in their wisdom deemed that this information was unwanted and unused and removed them from their site. Our Society has the 1841 and 1851 but sadly not the rest.

Perhaps you could just ask on our forum if there is ever an address you need and it might be possible for a look up to be made by somebody and let you know the details/reference.

For anyone new to manually browsing census records there is a column on the right hand side of each census search page on Ancestry headed 'Browse this collection'. By changing the County, Civil Parish and Sub-registration District panels you can generate a list of Enumeration District record batches. Sometimes institutions are given their own district and labelled accordingly. It can take a lot of patience to find specific streets this way but if the first page has a description of the district it can speed up the search.

It is pretty easy to find specific streets in the censuses using:
  • - the address search on The Genealogist
    - key word search on Ancestry
    - street search on FMP

I've tried it but I don't have much luck with the Keyword search on Ancestry. I used to use the address search on FMP a few years back and found it useful but I don't know if this facility is still as effective or not after the site changes. No experience of The Genealogist search.

Yes it will work on FMP but we comply with their Ts & Cs so we don't offer to check anything on there ;) results are from the National Archives who ultimately owns ALL data, so we are safe there.

I believe only 1881 and 1911 have been indexed by street name on Ancestry which may be why you haven't found any from the other censuses.
